To those who are pro-choice...?

I am wondering what you think a fetus is before it is born. Obviously it is a living thing, I think we can all agree on that, right? I mean, if you take it out of its' environment, it will cease living...So, if this is what you consider ok...to cease that living b/c it is not viable..what about a newborn? That is surely a child, yet if you left a baby unattended, it would surely cease living as well? This is recognized by all as horrible and inhumane...please explain your views to me. I am not being facetious...I am not being judgmental, I am just trying to understand. Thanks.

I am not trying to tell anyone how to believe, I am looking for explanations. I didn't even say how I believed.....but tell me...is a fetus alive, or not? What is your definition of a living thing?

I believe abortion should be kept legal but only used in certain situations, like in cases of rape, incest, or if the mother could die from giving birth.

I believe a fetus is an unborn baby, a living person, and that life starts at conception. For that reason abortions should only be done if they are absolutely necessary.

To Mugenhunt: A fetus is alive. It's a living thing.

This is so totally a personal question. A fetus has potential, but is not viable outside the womb until a certain maturation date. As a former Ultrasound Tech, I have seen so many things, not the least of which is the fetus's heartbeat and movement-long before the mother can feel the fetus's movements. I have seen anencephalic fetuses (undeveloped head-no chance for viability) and, of course, wonderfully developed normal appearing fetuses. While I personally think it is awful to terminate a fetus after the point of viability, I also know the consequences of unwanted children. The abuse and neglect are stunning. Although I believe no woman should be forced to deliver an unwanted term fetus,(e.g. the government at all levels do not have the right to interfere with personal medical decisions),it would be sooo helpful to reach out in a public onslaught of information directed at all people of childbearing age to be educated about birth control and adoption. This should be a massive effort by all levels of government. If the government wants to help, they need to get over the whole "religious" thing and not impose their beliefs on others. Birth control and EDUCATION are the keys. For the public, there is a lack of understanding and encouragement for use of condoms and other forms of birth control. (STD's anyone??) Thank you for bringing up the subject and I hope with all my heart that abortion can eventually become a non-political issue. Pregnant girls and women are under tremendous stress as it is. Let's help instead of hurt.

Yes, It is a person, but it is still that woman choice.
I could not personally abort a child.
The woman does have a choice.
1) Health reason. If the mothers health is in jeopardy.
2) Financial. I know this lady that just got a tumor remove out of her stomach the size of a bowling ball.
Her Insurance didn't cover the surgery, and all the special doctor visits. Which she had to pay, and she is still paying for. Thousand dollars in debt, that she can not even afford food for herself.
She did abort, their is no way that she could afford anything let alone a baby.
She tired to apply for help from the state and was turned down.
No matter what I am still her best-friend, and I could never hate someone for not believing what I believe in.

A baby, left unattended, will die from lack of care. A fetus that is too small to support life and is removed from the womb will die because it is not capable of performing the basic tasks of life on its own--- breathing, taking in food/nourishment and expelling waste, etc.

There is a huge difference--- a newborn can physically do all of the things required to sustain life even if no one provides it with the supplies needed, like food. A fetus, especially a less-developed one (under 26weeks or thereabouts) could not physically sustain life on its own.

Go to a NICU sometimes and see all the machines that a preemie is hooked up to and what those machines do and you will understand the difference.

For starters you are confusing two different concepts,

One who is Pro choice is not necessarily in favor of abortion, the two issues are fairly unrelated! one who is pro choice simply believes in a woman's right to chose for herself!

So next time you set out to try and change peoples thoughts and ideas, maybe try and get some of your facts straight.

BTW, it is every human's god given right to make their own choices, just as it is to believe how you want! I will not try and tell you how to believe so stop trying to tell me how I should believe!

I guess I feel that the convenience of the living outweighs the destruction of a fetus. We kill animals for food. We kill animals for convenience (a mouse in our house or spider for example). We have too many people in the world already and for me it is a matter of expediency. Life is not all that valuable (what are you doing to help victims of genocide in darfour or anywhere else for that matter). There are people starving to death in this world. Even you don't take action to save lives.

Before a fetus is viable, means before it can survive outside the womb, either under the care of it's parent, or with the assistance of medical professionals. A newborn, if left unattended, can be cared for and can survive perfectly well if attended by others. Leaving a newborn unattended, and letting it die is gross neglect, pure and simple, because that newborn can survive without it's parent.

I can understand where you are coming from here. Some people, though, are not understanding what you are saying.. Let me try to explain that she is not trying to argue that a woman "shouldn't have a right to decide what is done with her body". She's trying to tell her opinion that a fetus is alive, and I must say that when I put my head to my wife's stomach and felt it being kicked or listened as the doctor put a heart-beat on the speaker or watched my little girl squirm around on the ultrasound screen, I can tell you that is definitely alive whether she could have survived on her own or not. A question for the those of you 'pro-choice': If a woman doesn't want to keep a child because of the "financial burden" but the father did want it and would pay for everything, should she still be able to abort?

I must also say that I am not completely sure where exactly I stand on the whole abortion issue, but I know I would never have been able to do it to my kids..

To Maggie Mae: That's really screwed up... NEVER have children!!!

I think a fetus, before it's born, is not my business.

I don't want the state to exercise that much control over anyone's body; I certainly wouldn't want them to exercise it over mine.

A question for you...you obviously are against abortion. How many children are you adopting? What if a child has severe health issues and will live a short and painful life. Are you going to adopt that child, pay the medical costs, and watch it die an agonizing death? Unless you're willing to step into the shoes of those who have to make a heart-wrenching choice -- and I mean financially and legally step into their shoes -- who are you to judge someone else's actions and reasons?

"One move point that gets forgotten what would happen if abortion was made illegal. Before the Roe v. Wade decision was made women were still getting abortions but in back alleys by hacks that butchered the women and took there money. What would a young lady do if she was raped, she would be left with no choice at all and could even do harm to herself being forced to have the child.
In Ms. Simpson’s article she skips many heated topics within the abortion issue to try and make abortion a cut and dry subject. She talks as if women use abortion for everyday birth control and do not have feelings and an emotional tie to the unborn baby. Ms. Simpson’s avoidance of important issues such as if the woman’s life is in danger, or the woman has been raped or worse the pregnancy is the result of incest is very self serving. These three items must always be considered when discussing abortion. I believe that Ms. Simpson is trying to deceive the readers of this article by trying to make people see only one point in the many sided issue of abortion and by lying about facts concerning options women receive before they can have the abortion.
We as a society have to be careful when we try to draw lines in the sand and clearly define issues that deal with personal freedoms and liberties. Our country prides itself in giving our citizens the option to choose, so when did women become less than full citizens. We cannot have it both ways, whether you are pro-choice or pro-life we have to stick to the ground rules and not change them halfway thought the game. If abortion is made illegal, where does the government’s control of us as individuals end? Should the government by use of laws be allowed to stop men and women both from modifying, changing or altering their own bodies? I would rather see abortion legal and kept safe, reliable and regulated for the health, safety and welfare of all women that need the option." This is part of a recent paper I wrote for my Government class on Abortion.

I have seen too many unwanted children, neglected and abused to not be prochoice. What if the mother's health is at risk, how do you choose one over the other, or do you let both die. I have a hard time viewing issues like this as black or white, therefore choosing a varying shade of gray. We must take every situation seperately, that why it is pro CHOICE, not pro abortion!

The Pro-Choice view is that the child isn't truly alive until it is born. Until then, it is a growth, an object inside of the body with the capacity to become alive. Like a woman's eggs. Just because it has the capacity to become alive doesn't mean it is.

That's the view at least. You're operating under the assumption that everyone agrees with you on a fetus being alive. They don't.

Liberty is you making the choice. Oppression is someone else making it for you without your consent. Every law on the books takes away part of ones liberty. Right, since we have little or no liberty in this country what's the big deal. Just let the government decide.

tcob86
because the fetus is created in a womans body. and i think we should all be able to decide over our own bodies.
if a woman doesn't want to carry out a pregnancy then she should not have to.
