If I go into a shop and buy goods, can the shop choose not to issue me with a receipt, or are they legally obliged to do so? Is there a cut-off monetary limit whereby they don't need to issue a receipt if it's a sale under a certain amount? Does it depend on what type of goods you buy as to whether you're issued with a receipt? Or do you have no rights whatsoever to a receipt?

You're perfectly entitled to a receipt. In practice you may need to ask for it, but legally a vendor can't refuse to give you one. If he or she does, you have the right to withdraw from the sale (therefore ask before you hand over the cash). |

Firstly, may I apologise to 'Happy Penguin'. I clicked the wrong link and gave you a 'Thumbs Down' when I meant it to be a 'Thumbs Up'. I am very sorry.
Happy Penguin is absolutely right. There is no law insisting that a receipt is given for anything purchased.
It is however sensible to ask for a receipt for goods purchased in case the goods bought are, or become faulty during their warranty period, or if you find that a perishable item is uneatable etc.
If you are not offered a receipt but request one the seller is obliged by law to give you one, they cannot say that they do not have to.
You are also legally entitled to a recept for anything you buy privately. For example, if you buy a bike from your next door neighbour you are entitled to ask for and get a receipt for that purchase.
It is also the responsibility of the seller you purchased an item from to either replace or repair any faulty or inedible item.
Many shops say they are not responsible if goods are sold by them and later turn out to be faulty, they say it is the manufacturers responsibility and the item should be returned to them. Not true, they sold it to you and they have to accept responsibility.

I always ask for a receipt, yet have never thought to ask when buying from the market. I wonder what the stall holder would say if I brought the goods back and asked for a refund, but with no receipt I wonder how far I would get. Surely a receipt is every buyers right. |

No. There is no legal obligation to provide a receipt.
I would be grateful if Happy Penguin, Welcome to England et al could enlighten me as to what legal provision they believe states otherwise.
There is certainly no reference to any such law or regulation in Halsbury's Laws of England (I checked). |

They have to provide a receipt if you ask for one. The receipt is part of the deal and therefore part of the contract. If you do not use a bank card a receipt would be the only means of proof of purchase. You are entitled to return the goods if there is a fault therefore you have to have a receipt as proof of the deal. |

no but they must write you one if you ask for one. |

You have the right to a receipt.
Many places don't bother (or you will need to ask for one) as they know it will end up in the bin as soon as you take it out of the bag, so it's something of a waste of paper.
A receipt is proof of purchase, should you wish to return the item you have to have one - and from a company point of view, all expenditure needs to be backed up with proof, so just ask at the shop. |

well... some places are not really under or part of the mainstream market, and they can legally sell products without receipts except they might pay some property fees... that doesnt mean its not official, though im not too sure....
maybe street markets is the best i can think of....
but any place with a cashier in a mall or a store , especially a known brand such as k-mart, pathmark, cosco, 7-11, etc... should always give an receipt..... UNLESS it depends on the product....
if youre buying like slushies, or some purchases that is not approipriate to return, i believe SOMETIMES receipts are less required, though they still give receipts for lawful reasons |
