Yes, they will receive a small compensation, I remember hearing something like about $14 or $17 a day. I'm sure the sum will also differ between states.
But they have to see a lawyer, don't think it's just automatic.
It's disgusting, considering what innocent people go through being imprisoned wrongfully. Basically, their whole lives, as they knew them, were willfully destroyed. |

Not if they are just held waiting for trial. A few of states have compensation laws for those who have served time for which they have wrongly convicted. Most rely on special legislative bills for compensation. The idea is to compensate only those who have been wrongly convicted for something they have been proven innocent of; not just those who've gotten convictions overturned due to technicalities. |

Some have sued the State and won to get some compensation. I don't think they get money off the release in most cases. I think they have to either sue or threaten to. It's for the protection of the State, they put the money in to prosecuting someone that a Judge or Jury thought was guilty. |
