Urgent - Am I liable to pay for my contractor's cancellation cost?

A house handyman contractor, who worked on my neighbor's house, came to my house saturday yesterday asking me to replace my asphalt driveway to a concrete driveway. We ended up signing the contact, with 50% $ deposit ($1500), to go ahead with the job tomorrow monday. ThIS MORNING, after finding out that my money will be tight with this driveway job, and that the government conusmers protection act here allows a consumer 10 days to cancel a door-to-door renovation contract for any reason, I called the contractor to cancel it, and got my deposit cheque back. THIS LATE AFTERNOON, he called me saying that he had ordered a machine (back hoe) for my driveway job costing him $750, and he cannot cancel that order, and asked me to pay him the amount, or at least half of it. Am I liable for his costs, if he is indeed being charged for it?

No, and he won't be charged for the backhoe anyway. Contractors cancel orders all the time. |

No, you are not liable. If he did not wait the three days, that is his bad. Tell him if he bugs you about this again, you will report it to the state licensing agency. |
