Sharia Law (or to be exact elements of it) has been used in England and Wales now since 2007. Your friend is correct in that there are 5 courts. The primary elements that the courts cover are Divorce and inheritance matters which are civil cases.

This does not mean that any court can issue punishment to an individual as this comes under the criminal framework of England and Wales law.

Contrary to popular belief (and that stirred up by UK press) Sharia law is not a bad thing and is only used when both parties agree. Do not confuse Sharia law with legal systems adopted by hardline Islamic states. In many cases Sharia law is a much quicker and more civil way of settling a matter than the long winded and bureaucratic existing method.

Well never say never of course, but I somehow doubt it would come to stonings and beatings lol.

However personally I would find it a worrying development and just another step towards Britain losing it's identity and the true British becoming an ethnic minority!!!

It is a bad thing for the UK as it erodes equality for women, especially Muslim women. The UK has a major problem with forced marriages especially marriages that occur in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. By allowing Sharia law it works against the advances against forced marriages that the government has been trying to stop by forcing women to subject themselves to as system that is inherently biased against them. Even though England allows them I wonder if a challenge was mounted against them such a court is legal under the European Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms especially when you consider Article 3, Article 13, Article 14, and Article 17. Also I wonder if they are considered legal under EU law regarding the definition of a tribunal. Reason why I question the legality of them is due to the fact women are not equals in such system and it runs in conflict with other laws that deal with equality. The man may be exaggerating about the effect of Sharia Law in the UK. However Sharia Law does erode the rights of women thereby creating inequality which is not acceptable to me. Hopefully when David Cameron becomes the next Prime Minister in 2010 he will put an end to them.

Sharia Law has no place in the British Justice system.
It is only being propelled by dreamers such as that 'old duffer' The Archbishop of Canterbury.
The next sop the ethnic minorities will want and demand is that of When a member of the ethnic minorities is being tried in a Court of Law; Seven members of the jury must be Asian!
Well we all know the verdict that that would bring?
If people such as the Archbishop of Canterbury want to do something useful;Why don't they champion the Christian minorities in Africa who are being persecuted by Muslims on a daily basis?

I think it is very dangerous for the UK and very sickening because now part sharia law is implemented they will want the full sharia law in UK

At present Sharia law is not recognised in the British legal system and hopefully never will be, although the way Islam is infiltrating every niche of society it wount be too long, go to Australia they have the right attitude when dealing with this sort of thing, live like us or ship out!
