If the death penalty was enforced in a timely manner, murder rates would go down. Instead, convicted criminals are on death row for years and years as they go through legal wrangling, stays of execution, etc. etc. Where's the deterrent? |

The jail system does not reform criminals. Most come you worse than when they went in.
Also, give the death penalty for more crimes, like rape, and youll see the occurances of those crimes go down. |

years ago they got it wrong
today with d.n.a this seems to be the cruncher in proving the case
if the case is proved 100%
then we should have the death penalty increased
and having listerned to the crimes in england I wish it was here
when you hear of a child killed by an adult in a sick manner
I would pull the lever that hangs them
at least they get a mercy killing not their victims |

it's a good thing in my opinion, why bother wasting tax money feeding, and maintaining horribly insane serial killers who will never change, why? |

this is kinda off the subject but i think how they kill is wrong, lethal injection poisions cost a LOT of money. i think its cruel how the prisioners have to wait and wait to die. they administer a lot of chemicals. im for the death penalty but i think we should just use a gun to the head. its faster, more effieicnet, less expensive, and not a cruel to the one dying. instant death.... |

My opinion is that I can't support the death penalty unless we can be absolutely sure that the person is 100% guilty. There are too many ways that someone innocent can be put in jail for something they haven't done. |

Yes we have the death penalty , but they sit on death row forever and it costs a lot of money for there care! I say put them to death, and be done with it!!!! If the death penalty was to be followed through in time it would put a stop to a lot of the problem. A lot of americans could be feed with the money we waist keeping people alive on death row! |

Someone kills someone, then yes...they should be killed also. what is the point of keeping them in prison for life and having tax payers pay to feed and cloth them for 30 years or more? |

I believe in the death penalty for only the most heinous crimes, and only when the evidence is overwhelming. It prevents the guilty party from coming back into society and committing similar crimes.
Otherwise, they might be granted parole, when they are too dangerous to be part of free society. |

The fact is that murder rates are not as high in states where the death penalty is legal. Here is a fact that you can't deny and/or debate. The new Iraqi Government believes in the death penalty for mass murdering dictators and since that sentence was levied on Saddam Hussein for the evil which he perpetuated on people. Now he can NEVER put innocent men, women, and children in mass graves again! It works...
By the way, don't forget to put this in your essay: There is a BIG difference between EVIL people who MURDER and good people who TERMINATE and ERADICATE EVIL MURDERERS. Killing and Murder are two different things. Even GOD ordered good people to kill bad people from time to time to keep the peace. |

- Its not an effective deterrent. In order for something to be an effective deterrent, it must be 1) swift, 2) certain, and 3) severe (Sociology 101). The death penalty is severe but its anything but swift or certain. Lots of people who commit murder dont get the death penalty, and those who do sit around for up to 20 years waiting to die.
- Its unfairly administered. If your a member of a minority or if you are poor, you are much more likley to get the death penalty then a middle class white guy. Essentially, whether or not you get the death penalty depends on how much money you have and what your social class is.
- Its more expensive to keep someone on death row for 20 years filing appeal after appeal than it is to simply lock him up and throw away the key.
- There are countless people on death row who are innocent. Look at all the people who recently were cleared by DNA evidence - then think of how many innocent people were executed as a result of overzealous prosecution, and conviction on insufficient evidence. There has even been a stay of execution in many states because so many inmates were cleared by DNA evidence 20 years after the fact (Illinois comes to mind).
And these are just the rational reasons - lets ignore the fact that its totally hypocritical and inhumane. The only argument FOR the death penalty is a morbid sense of revenge. |

Kill them all, let God sort them out.
Are you that naive. If somebody kills your mother, should they be released and society blamed? God save us from left wing liberal wackos such as yourself. |

The death penalty has two major benefits:
1. It deals with undesirables in the best possible way: eliminating them.
2. It's cheaper than keeping them alive for 25 years, feeding them, clothing them, providing them with supervision, etc. |

I am against it; I don't believe that the government/courts should be able to decide who lives and who dies.
The main reason, however, why I believe it is wrong is because there have been many, many wrongful convictions in the past and they will continue to exist in the future. Once you've killed someone, and it turns out they were innocent, you cannot fix that wrong.
And it's not just the person who was executed who suffers. Their family and friends suffer, too, even if they themselves didn't do anything wrong. Someone's loved one shouldn't just be taken away and killed again.
At least if that person was just kept in prison, their family could visit them and keep in contact. And if that convict was later determined innocent, at least they could be released and given a new life. Not possible if they're dead. |

The USA is the only westernized country that still has the death penalty. Only >1% of all convicted murderers are actualy killed by capital punishment, and that is because they're crimes were particularly horendous.
Capital punishment should be kept, it is a good deterent for many people that keeps them from perfoming terrible crimes. Plus it is hardly used and more times than not a prisoner not given the death penalty will die anyway while serving a long jail sentence in a prison fight or riot.
Only the worst of the worst are ever exicuted, and if there is even a shadow of a dought that a person is innocent of a crime the death penalty would not even be an option to the jury what so ever.
Prisoners on death row have somtimes died in prison of old age, thus showing how long the judicial system takes. So even if you are given the death penalty chances are you will serve a life sentence without ever being exicuted. Capital punishment isn't abused, hardly anyone ever even gets it, it is mainly only used as a deterent.
I mean if I were a serial killer, why would I kill one person for life in prison when I can get life in prison for killing 100 or 1,000. There has to be somthing in place telling that serial killer that if he kills he will pay, "hmm mabey if I only killed my Ex and not her entire famly like I was hoping, they'll only give me 25 years for Duress, a crime of passion, if I kill them all I might get the deth penalty so I'm not going to kill them all."
Capital Punishment is a deterent, not an abused form of "an eye for an eye", it should be maintained. |

I say that it is wrong...very un-Christian like and that sometimes...the people that get the death penalty aren't even guilty! so it is wrong...very hypocritical because lets say the person being put in death penalty is a murderer...then you murderer him...it's very hypocritical at that point |

Murderers are rarely recidivists even when there isn't a death penalty.
However, the death penalty can't be "reversed" if the person is found not guilty. This is why Britain has no death penalty any more - the film "Let Him Have It" is about the case that basically ended it.
Liechtenstein was the first country in the world to abolish it, in the 1700s. Abolition is also a mandatory condition of joining the European Union. |

There is a terrific resource specifically for students writing papers or debaters at
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=1917
In the meantime, with sources below---
You don't have to sympathize with criminals or want them to avoid a terrible punishment to ask if the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime and to think about the risks of executing innocent people. Your question is much too important to settle without thinking about these.
126 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.
The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.
We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.
The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?
The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person. |

It should be used for extremely violent criminals, such as mass murderers. |

Some people should be killed, but the government can't do it because the justice system is imperfect. Innocent people get murdered. For that reason, the death penalty should be illegal. It's also inhumane the way they do it. Lethal injection is just easier to watch. It has to be terrifying for the person being killed. If you're going to execute someone it should be quick, like a bullet through the back of the head. Yes, I have bias. Everyone does. |

The death penalty should NOT be abolished but used more quickly then it is now. Currently, one has to wait 10-15+ before it is finally used. Thats money that could be used to help our people better themselves and their lives, instead of housing thousands of criminals who dont care about anything. It's no surprise that murderers aren't afraid to commit their crimes. As far as prison is concerned, one gets 3 square meals a day, free medical & dental, free college, free legal services, even a salary for a 'job' while in prison. THAT'S punishment? Why are prisoners treated better then real people? WHO CARES if they suffer during execution? WHY SHOULD ANYONE CARE? |

I oppose it for the same reason I oppose abortion: I value human life. I am, however, a huge fan of hard labor. Another reason is the chance of false conviction. If you realize that someone was falsely convicted, you can revoke a sentence of hard labor and properly compensate him (yes, it's a crappy way to spend x years of your life, but at least your still alive). You can't take back execution. |

Death, or the taking of someone's life is not justifiable unless they have killed on numerous occassions. Rather than taking a person's life, why not leave them on an island, and make them fend for themselves if they are so violent and dangerous, rather than killing? Isn't that the same thing? Why kill if it can be used in corruption? |

Ok if they plead guilty than they should be sentenced to the death penalty but then everyone would plead innocent- so that wouldn't work- so there should be a death penalty to scare people out of their socks- but it should barely be used. |

IN my opinion, the death penalty should NOT be legal. I think if someone was sentenced to the death penalty, they should instead be sentenced to life and after life in prison. The criminal should suffer for what he or she did. Usually when the court sentences the person to the death penalty, the wait for months and sometimes years counting down the days untill they die. Thats wrong. The criminal should be set in a cell for life and when they die set the body in another cell to rot for the remainder of the sentence.
I also think the murder sentences should be looked at carefully. The case should be reviewed numerous times so their not putting someone in jail for the wrong reason. Some people have went to jail for the false evidence and the really never did anything. But I also think if someone had been convicted for murder in any degree the sentencing should be atleast 40 years and mabye more depending on the brutality of the crime. |

i think the death penalty should be illegal! Ya that person is wrong for taking some ones life, but you shouldnt decide if they need to die. the person who kills the murderer is just as wrong as the murderer. no one should have the right to play god. they should spend life in prison so they can feel bad for what they did |

Nothing is perfect, and while I do think it is inhumane. What type of inhumane act did the prisoner have to commit to receive a death sentence? I think it is necessary in some cases, but it has been used in the wrong cases before as well. |
