i would make a law that says if youve lived in a house for a certain amount of years and have paid a certain % you can not get foreclosed on.

nightwind-how can you say that someone else deserves another persons home. if i lived in a house and payed for it for 20 years its not fair that a bank can buy my home, ive put money and time into it and just becuase they cant afford it during a recession doesnt mean they will stop paying it forever, it just means that during bad times, you shouldnt feel the wrath of trillion dollar bank companies taking your home.

So you are going to make it a law that you only have to pay for half your house? Wouldn't that violate the contract clause of the Constitution?

Now it is time for you to learn the what would happen if a law such as you suggest were to actually be passed.
The law says that if you live in a house for a certain amount of time and it is against to law for the bank to foreclose if you stop paying. This first thing that would happen is that all loans would then be for that certain amount of time minus 1 day. This would cause the amount of the payment to skyrocket and no one would be able to buy a house. So no new houses would be built and many people that build houses would be out of work. And since at least some of those people would have been in the houses prior to the law or not in long enough for the law to protect them they would default on their loans and since no one can afford a loan the banks would start to fail. |

Look, I am a bona fide liberal and card-carrying member of the ACLU, but even I know that laws that say you can live in your house without paying your mortgage are not going to help everyone. Being liberal does NOT mean being a fool, and calling foolish ideas foolish does not mean you lack empathy.
Back in the days of the Glass-Steagall Act, we handled this issue with loan limits that kept people out of houses that they cannot afford. Reagan's bank deregulation is what caused this big mess--actually, the key legislation, the Depositary Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act, came in under Clinton's watch.
I am glad you are interested in social welfare, but you'll need to gain a bit more sophistication if you really want to have a meaningful voice. That is what's wrong with our country right now--every idiot has an opinion, and no one is interested in separating the wheat from the chaff. |
