I have lived in Tennesse now since 2002, and got married in 2007,
Originally from Canada, I came across the border with my present wife who came up to Canada in 2002 and I came back with her, with no problems at the border whatsover, we were waived through with no problems, not even identification was asked to be seen.
Now, we have decided to call it quits and I want to return home to Canada, and with no passport I dont know what to expect.
This Western Hemipshere Travel Inititiave apparently kicks into effect on June 1st/2009 and according to what Ive been told, you will need a passport after that date to enter Canada even if your a citizen.
My question is, will just having regular ID, like drivers license, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate, will this be enough for me to cross back into Canada?
I was born and raised in Canada if this helps.
Also, will I be detained and deported for being here illegally and if so, how long will I be detained for?

If you were born in Canada, then you are still a Canadian citizen. |

You will not be able to board a plane for a flight to Canada without a passport. You will be able to enter Canada by road, but expect a long delay at the border, and a fee from Customs Canada because they have to check that you really are Canadian.
Your better bet is just to get a Passport before you go home. it'll be much less hassle.

Call any Canadian Embassy for specifics - they may give a one time visa to re-enter Canada.
Your passport must be issued by the country of your birth. Start now to get one. |

You would need a passport to fly IN to the u.s., not to leave it. Canada will admit you with identification. |

Contact the Canadian Embassy. They will help you get your Maple Leaf Card so you can get back to you country of origin.
OR, if you try and cross and they deport you.. well, mission accomplished! It might be quicker than getting your Maple Leaf card through Canadian Bureaucracy!
If you were making money here, I would worry the IRS will get you, not the Border Patrol. If you do come in contact with any government-types (ie detention, arrest) make sure to say, "Allah Ahkbar!" a few times. That should get you out of the USA pretty quickly! |
