I support it but I'm having troubles explaining why I do, I think it is not fair, unjust for children to not be able to attend the same school as their friends because of their skin color

Brown v. Board overturned the Plessey v. Ferguson idea that "separate but equal" was sufficient. The court in brown rested on the idea that in the south, separate WAS NOT equal. Brown v. Board is a realistic approach to the situation in America.
School systems need money and resources. These two things were denied to African Americans throughout much of the 20th century. By putting all the students together, school systems would not be able to divert resources to the white schools while ignoring the black schools. A higher percentage of white students were going to college, as opposed to blacks. Part of this was because of financial reasons, part of it was because of college admittance practices, and part of it was because of the education that Black had been receiving. Either way, these white students, after graduating college, would want to teach at white schools. These are only 2 things that lead to why separate was not equal.
I personally feel that I have learned from diversity of ideas. When I am around people who's experiences are different from mine, I learn something new. Thus, diversity is a large part of education. An intelligent student, when given the proper resources, will still succeed regardless of whether he or she took a bus to get to that school. My high school was half white and half black. I think that that makeup helped make me a well-rounded person who can thrive in any scenario, no matter who my audience is. I am no doubt a major fan of Brown v. Board of education
P.S. I forgot to mention the whole legal theory about how Blacks pay the same taxes as whites, but were denied the benefit of those taxes (seeing as how they were being diverted to the white schools). Feel free to add that in. |
