What are some reasons marijuana was made illegal?

Marijuana is illegal for one reason, and one reason only, and it has nothing to do with its use as an intoxicant or the altered states that are induced when the drug is ingested.

It's all about commerce. Money. Greenbacks.

The stock and plant that marijuana is derived from is a fibrous material that can be used to manufacture all sorts of products: paper, plastics, "hurds" from the stock of the plant can be processed to make furniture and even, a more recent discovery, fuels.

Special interest groups and lobbyists have frequently moved against the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana, because the potential uses for hemp could easily cause an economic upset in a number of markets.

As with all things, the reason is capital, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

It should be as that would make it easier to control, and potentially boost the ecomomy.

It's illegal because it's a drug that alters the state of mind. Though it's quite similar to alcohol in that if you don't have too much, your mental state will not change.

It's also viewed at a "gate-way" drug. My personal opinion on the matter is that one huge reason it's a "gate-way" drug is because those who deal pot also deal other drugs. Said dealer is most likely going to try and sell everything he or she has. A person going to buy the pot may be convinced to try something else.
If pot were regulated and sold in stores like tobacco, the chances of getting into other, heavier drugs, is greatly reduce, in my opinion.

My personal opinion:

the reason it was made illegal is because the government cannot control it like they do tobacco (i.e. taxation purposes).

I say legalize it - there have been studies for it's "medicinal" effects in easing cancer patients pains and while others may say it is a drug, well, guess what? so is tobacco! tobacco provides the same high and giddy feeling in your body the way marijuana does. like i said - taxation!!!

up until sometime during or after world war 2, the gov. paid people to grow hemp.
about this time du pont was looking to get a patent for nylon. so the
gov. decided to make hemp illegal. because law enforcement wasn't
sophisticated enough at the time to tell the difference between hemp
and grass they decided to make anything with a leaf on it illegal which
took care of everything, so no decision needed to be made, everything
became illegal.
