The crime involving a threat for purposes of compelling a person to do an act against his or her will, or for purposes of taking the person's money or property.

The term blackmail originally denoted a payment made by English persons residing along the border of Scotland to influential Scottish chieftains in exchange for protection from thieves and marauders.

In blackmail the threat might consist of physical injury to the threatened person or to someone loved by that person, or injury to a person's reputation. In some cases the victim is told that an illegal act he or she had previously committed will be exposed if the victim fails to comply with the demand.

Although blackmail is generally synonymous with Extortion, some states distinguish the offenses by requiring that the former be in writing.

Blackmail is punishable by a fine, imprisonment, or both.

In California, extortion aka blackmail can be prosecuted as a class E felony. The offender may be sentenced up to four years in state prison for a first offense and/or a $10,000 fine. Other states are likely similar or harsher. If the convict has a prior record, the sentence may be longer.

I'm going to go out of the limb here and say that that someone is you and I think you have blackmailed someone. it seams like you yourself deny this based on your question. so for you to find out how much trouble you can get into you have to say what kind of blackmail did you do? lets start from there then you will get better answers but I can tell you not knowing all the details that when someones threttens that means they dont want to do it so I would play low key if I were you clean my own mess make a good effort to fix the problem in a good way if its possible and hope that they will stop threttening you. What do they want in return? they must want something in return, no? Thretten you with what?
