I'm non union and was just curious if an employer can just demote anyone anytime they please. It just doesn't seem right. I made a big move from Las Vegas to Texas for a specific job because i had the proper experience. Now my employer decides to demote me and cut my pay drastically. He says "I cant pay you anymore until you can prove to me that you can do this work in the field" I'm thinking to myself WTF!?!?! You hired me to do this cause of the experience i have and now i have to prove myself to you after a year and no mishaps in my previous position.

If you have a contract you can enforce it. Otherwise, employment is a new contract every day and it can change every day. If you and the employer reach an agreement for another day, then you work for a day. If you cannot agree on pay or conditions, then you find a new gig and the employee finds a new employee. |

Unless you have a written contract, you are an 'at will' employee. That means your job does NOT exist the minute they decide it does not. The job HAD no longer exists. Accept the new offer of leave. |

At will situation. Unfortunately that means yes he can demote or even fire you for pretty much any reason. |
