What are the procedural and tactical differences between an interview and an interrogation?

In an interrogation, the person being questioned is in custody and is not free to leave.

An interview is not antagonistic or hostile...an interrogation can be.

Yes and no. In an interview you have asked a person to submit to questioning, in an interrogation the subject has been detained already.

From a criminal justice stand point the purpose of an interview is to discover what happened in an event, while the purpose of an interrogation is to elicit a confession.

Both are conducted in the same manner. You ask the subject questions regarding an incident, and you take those answers and compare them to other answers you get for similar questions regarding the incident. You may ask 5 or 10 questions through the course of the interview about where the subject was that night, each question worded differently and timed to throw the subject off. Idealy when you catch the subject telling something different you have then found a weakness in their story and you can begin to exploit it.

In both an interview and an interrogation the subject is allowed to have a lawyer present, but you have to be nice in an interview or the lawyer and subject will leave. In an interrogation you can be slightly more aggressive (not too much though or the subject will just stop talking) since the lawyer and subject cannot just leave the interrogation.
