Pros:
Cut down on costs to the criminal justice system for needlessly processing criminals guilty of simple possession.
Individuals will not have to fear having their employment prospects ruined by simple possession charges.
Cons:
MJ is more dangerous than many people think, it makes people lazy and can impair the mind.
Legalizing it will only make it more available. I don't doubt that it would become more commonplace for younger kids in schools to be able to obtain the stuff.
Myths:
You can tax MJ. You can't, it is a weed, it grows everywhere as easily as grass does. If you could make oil in your closet, would you? Of course you would! If you could grow MJ in your closet, would you buy it and pay a tax on it? No, you wouldn't.
My Idea:
Decriminalization. Decriminalization would address the two pros I mentioned above while minimizing the cons. I'm convinced it needs to stay underground, but doesn't need to be illegal. |

weed makes u relax
cons

Mr. Serious

Pros- if u smoke, u can smoke whenever u want without having to worry about anything.
Cons- The gov't will most definately start taxing out the azz for it and this could make the cost high as hell for something that used to be cheap.
If they do legalize it <whisper> it might become so common place that more people might move up to harder drugs like cocaine, heroine, etc. when they get bored with weed. |

Let me first state that I loathe potheads for the simple reason that they are quite possibly the most annoying people on the face of the planet, however I still think that pot should be legal. Why, because when you really look at the pros and cons there are no cons. I was tasked with researching and presenting this very question in a sociology class in college and was rather surprised to find that it just makes sense to legalize, the following bullets should answer the why:
- government regulation makes the drug safer
- tax revenue, boosting the economy
- save money on ending a large part of the "war on drugs" and the DARE program both of which are ineffective and huge wastes of money
- potheads, while annoying, are generally not violent unlike drunks
- Lessons learned from prohibition
- lessen the availability for illegal activity (i.e. terrorism) to be fueled by drug sale revenue
I could go on but will not. Take it from someone who doesn't smoke pot and finds it annoying at best, it SHOULD be legal. |

It was banned due to racial reasons (I saw a show about it on the History Channel :) Back in the early 20th century it was associated with African Americans and banned.
I have never heard of anyone die from THC (the active ingredient) - I can't say the same for Alcohol.
There was actually no constitutional way for the government to ban it, so what they did at first was make it illegal to sell it without a certain sort of permit, and never made any of the permits. Eventually they decided to just forget about the constitution and ban it altogether.
You'll also see that the history of marijuana's criminalization is filled with:
Racism
Fear
Protection of Corporate Profits
Yellow Journalism
Ignorant, Incompetent, and/or Corrupt Legislators
Personal Career Advancement and Greed |

Pro:
Quality assurance
Control
Keeps weed consumption social
removes the criminal gains
Cons:
A lot of weed is laced with other drugs to give a better high - this would end.
It would be taxed.
Quality would go down as time to market would be reduced. |
