What are the requirements in order to file for UNEMPLOYMENT ?

My son just got fired and I am curious about the requirements for him to receive his unemployment benefits. How long must you wait after termination ? Does he need to go in person ? All that stuff. He's only been jobless for a week and the hopes of finding work in the area is BLEAK to say the least.

I live in NJ and you can file online here at www.njuifile.net. You can file the day after you lose a job. The requirements would be listed on the website. You could go to your states website and find all the info from there

being employed full time at least one year without interruption (does not include vacations) and the termination was not due to conduct problems (insulting people and the like) on his behalf

He must have worked at least one year full time to qualify...I would suggest your son to either file online or in person. It will ask him to list 3 companies he has worked prior to the most recent. Reason being, if he does not qualify for the job he got fired from, perhaps he will with the other jobs. After he files, it takes about 1 week for the determination and they will notify your son if he qualifies or not. To start receiving compensation, that will take two weeks... He will get paid 60% of what he was getting paid. So if he was making $1,000 every two weeks, his pay would be $600. In addition, once he starts to receive benefits, it is essential that he "claim his weeks" at designated time so that there would be no delays in receiving payment. Have a great day!

If he got fired for a valid reason then good luck with that.

In Massachusetts you can file immediately, but don't get benefits for a week or so at most. You can file over the phone.

It depends why he was fired. Some reasons for being fired would disqualify him from receiving benefits, others would not. If you are fired for insubordination you don't get benefits, if you are fired for incompetence you do. The rules vary by state.

The other question is health insurance. Look into COBRA. Also, some states have subsidized health insurance for the unemployed.
Roll over his 401k into an IRA.
