What can I expect next?

My 18 year old high school senior is bi-polar with psychosis (he hears voices). He got fired from his job and arrested Friday night for stealing. I got him out on bond. His first hearing is Thursday. I can't afford an attorney because of the astronomical medical bills I already have for him this year. Should he plead guilty? Should he plead not guilty and if so by reason of mental defect? What are the sentencing guidelines in Ohio? Can anyone help me?
Additional Details
Additional info...he doesn't have a public defender. There's some kind of hearing on Thursday where he either pleads guilty (then he gets an attorney) or not guilty. I tried to get him a public defender to be at that hearing, but they won't even talk to me. It seems to a little backwards here. He didn't even see a judge when bond was set. The sheriff has documents that my son was forced to sign by his employer to avoid being charged with being unruly too. His employer won't release the documents and I can't get the from the sheriff because the officer hasn't turned them in yet. I'm about to cry over all of this because I know that the psychosis and bi-polar is a HUGE contributor to his doing this in the first place.

You SHOULD be talking with his court appointed attorney. If he hasn't had one appointed yet, I'd start with legal aid.
