i am 18 and i got caught shoplifting at walmart, i never had a criminal background and i told the police that i was 16 because i got scared and never been in a situation like this before but i think they wanted to see if i had a criminal background so they took me to the police station ane finger printed me and took pics of me my aunt came and got me but i got somethin in the mail sayin i had to pay 133 dollars and now i have to go to court what do you could happen what could they charged me with??? Or will i go to jail???

They will charge you with shoplifting which is a misdemeanor. The prosecutor will probably offer you a plea deal where you agree to pay a fine and not go to that store for some period of time. You really don't have much choice but to accept the deal. You definitely will not go to jail. However you now will have a record and if you shoplift again they will make the fine or penalty even more.
They probably don't care that you lied about your age. Your aunt probably set them straight about your real age. |

In United States law:
Shoplifting is not a felony so you should only have to pay the fine and you may be on probation. Problem: you lied to the police. The court will know and its very bad to keep lying. Your best defense at this point is to say that this was the first time you'd ever attempted something like that and because you were so miserable and terrified that you might go to jail for shoplifting at 18 that you lied to avoid it. Do NOT tell them you planned to steal it or else it will become "burglary" which has a harsher punishment than "shoplifting". If asked, tell them you saw it and wanted it so you stole it (which is probably what happened).
A word of advice: Don't ever talk to the police if they question you. You have the legal right to refuse their questions until you talk to your attorney and this way you cannot be trapped. The police will pressure you and may get angry, but they cannot force you to speak as it is your right to remain silent. Then you can devise an appropriate plan with your attorney later. |

If you have a good background and have been good in school and haven't done this before you will probably get off with a fee and have to do some good services for a certain amount of time. You are not going to jail. |
