What do people have against abstinence?

What do people have against the message of abstinence? It is the only thing that actually prevents pregnancy and STDs 100% of the time, why is it now allowed in some public schools? It should at least be discussed, does anyone have any articles or information about why this is sometimes banned?

I live in Michigan and in my school they are ONLY allowed to teach abstinence. i think it is kind of rediculous. i beleive that they should teach both. they should teach students birth control and abstinence. the simple fact is is that abstinence isn't that practical. |

its because its very religious, and when they put it public schools, maybe the aren't catholic like me [I'm orthodox, but still a Christian], and the parents are angry because the children are being taught something they do not believe in

My school has program called abstinence. My brother goes to a different school and they don't have any kind of program that talks about the importance of being abstinent because parents aren't comfortable with their kids learning about it. It makes no sense, but that's what the principle of the school said. |

Absolutely nothing, but I don't think it should be taught exclusively. "Abstinence education" is teaching nothing but abstinence. I protest this as unrealistic. I have never heard of talking about abstinence being banned. If it is, that is wrong. |

Its a great theory but people are not wired for it.
You can promote it, but make sure condoms, etc are available

It DOES NOT prevent pregnancy and STD's 100% of the time. Go to any high school and you'll see that. Kids these days are way to stubborn to listen to adults. (Trust me b/c I'm still a 'teen). In my old junior high school, about twenty eighth graders dropped out due to pregnancy. And yes, they were all forced to take an "abstinence" class.
I'm not against abstinence classes, but I'm against the way they're run. There is something seriously wrong with it if the students of the class hold its teachers and just the class in general in contempt. |
