What do you feel is being patrioctic?

Obama was bashed and probably still is bashed; just because of not wearing the american lapel on his collar or not even placing right hand over his heart, during, the National Anthem. So what i'm saying is this, the rule was established in 1931 when it became our National Anthem, from a "poem the star-spangled banner being written in 1814." So why is it so patriotic to place right hand in 1931 and after but no one was doing it before 1931. Aren't there other ways of being patrioctic than wearing a flag or placing your right hand over your heart?
I mean, I see the KKK put there right hands over their heart all the time, and they definitely do not represent what I feel America should represent; so they to me aren't patriotic! So otherwise, symbols don't make you patriotic it is what you do for this country!
So how do you feel about this and what is being patriotic to you? Additional Details cbjack-so you're telling me Bush served our country? And that he qualified to be President? Obama, interests for this country are pretty much what the majority of what the American people want out of America; I think change is a good thing! People who don't want change or Obama is because they are scared! This country has been going down hill since Bush came into office; now, if you can tell me that you have never complained about Bush and what wrong he has done, than you're a liar! so if you represent Mccain, you are representing Bush too! One in the same!

I don't think it is unpatriotic to refrain from saying the anthem or putting your hand over your heart. I think it's your choice.
I don't think you have to say the anthem or hang up a flagpole in your yard to be patriotic.
I think THE MOST patriotic thing you can do is vote. So many men and women died so that we can have that right to vote and I think voting should be a requirement. |

A true patriot wants the best for all.He or she sees all Americans as equals.I do not get that impression from the majority of McCain supporters. They are scared. They are scared of empowering anyone that doesn't look like them.People can say we live in a different time all they want but it is bs.I live in Texas.Showing our support for Obama has been a fight. My truck keyed at the grocery store and my Obama sticker scratched off.My 4 Obama signs stolen out of my yard.My kids coming home from school telling me about the mock elections they had at school. How a man named McCain and a black guy are running for president. This is what my 8 yr old said to me after school a few weeks back.I told him his name is Obama. This coming from a school? It is appalling. My 11 yr old coming home saying if Obama wins he is changing America's name to Obama nation. Its so pathetic what the Republicans will do to get a vote. You have not heard underhanded bs come from the Obama campaign. All McCain can do is try to bash Obama. That's because all McCain has left are lies.Up until 7 yrs ago the KKK clan did demonstrations/rallies 2 blocks from my kids school on the grounds of our County Seat(outside the courthouse)The school would send out flyers saying to the kids not to attend because it was wrong, yet the kkk had to be approved (permit)in order to rally.Who in office allows this?People seem to not practice what they preach and I am so tired of it.Obama 08 |

I feel that this is completely stupid, of course they were going to drown him on this one.
It's an electoral campaign, and when your bashing a man because of this, your desperate for a lead. Anything helps, nothing serious, I'm sure they would jump on McCain too.
Being patriotic also to me means, loyal to your country, in other words, not the KKK. |

Patriotism has NOTHING to do with flag pins and traditional versus nontraditional stances durning the national anthem. I suppose it differs between each person. MY PERSONAL BELIEF is that it is patriotic to give to your country in ANY form of service, and to give back to those who fight for and defend us. ANYONE claiming to be patriotic for sending our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters off to fight in other countries, MUST NECESSARILY demand that the MOST patriotic thing to do, even moreso than sending them into battle, is defending and supporting them upon return. We have a quarter of a million Veterans living in poverty in this country. 1 in 4 of our Vets are homeless each night in the US. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing that is right or patriotic about that.

Being patriotic is not a matter of what you believe is right for the country, but a matter of how you express your beliefs and how you present yourself and your ideals to others. Here in America, we have our unalienable rights as citizens, as stated in our Declaration of Independence, and to fully take advantage of these rights; to fight for them; to debate them...Is truly patriotism. To be Patriotic is to care enough about your country to participate in the political process, (or not, if that is your choice). We have Freedom of Speech, and to use it is Patriotic, truly. We are so lucky to have that right, and yet we take it for granted. We must not be complacent; we must use our rights to benefits ourselves and others, especially those who are being denied these rights. This is simply my opinion, but I believe that true Patriotism is using the rights we have as Americans for the right and just cause, whatever you believe it is. |

I think it is patriotic when ... not in order of priority, but as I thought of them.
1 ... We vote - not only at the presidential election, but also our local elections.
2 ... We appear in court to take part on jury duty when chosen to do so.
3 ... We pay the taxes that we are supposed to pay even though we don't like it.
4 ... We support our war veterans by providing health care to them and support for their orphaned children. By not mean-mouthing those that are on the front lines even if we don't approve of the action they are in.
5 ... We follow the laws of the land until such time as we vote those laws out that we do not approve of.
6. We remember our constitution and conduct ourselves according to it's principles.
7 We speak up to those we have elected to provide feedback, both positive and negative, to help them do the job we elected them to do.
8. If our shores are attacked, we lift ourselves up to protect them, even if it means putting ourselves into jeopardy.
9. We honor our forfathers and elders understanding that we may differ in our opinions, but acquiecsing that everyone has a right to their own thoughts and council. That those more experienced than ourselves have valuable knowledge to share with us.
10. We do believe we are a community of people and not a bunch of self made islands, so we know we need to work together to keep this land strong.
United we stand, divided we fall. and, We are our brothers keeper

I think that you are patriotic if you like your country. But theres always going to be things that the country is divided on. Racial issues etc, soooo ui guess what I'm saying is that the only people who aren't patriotic are the ones who purposley want to bring the country down. Othere than that, every 1 is patriotic in their own way. |

Not talking BS about this country like some Americans on here do. Like the Michelle Obama thing saying she's for the first time proud of this country. That is like slapping all 300 million of us in the face. So I have deemed her unpatriotic. |

Before 1931 many people WERE putting their hand over their heat, standing for the palying of the national anthem, etc.--but you are right, these are only symbols of patriotism. One is patirotic when they believe in the ideals of the US Constitution and other significant documents of our history. (Look up the Americans Creed for some specifics). The symbols are not patriotism, but if one should refuse to participate in the symbol, it surely causes others to question where they DO stand on the substance. Our political conpetition causes special sensitivity to the issue. Senator Obama must surely have known the value of the symbols several months ago, but at least now, he does for sure. |
