I think legalizing marijuana is a great idea. However, it will need to be heavily regulated so that the government can tax it and make any semblance of a profit off of it. Here's what I think would make it work.
Limit the amount that an individual can own without a "Grower's Permit" to one ounce. Anyone carrying over this limit will be responsible for paying a fine similar to a traffic violation.
Sell "Grower's Permit"s to a few select individuals for massive amounts of money. Do a background check on these individuals to ensure that they have no links to the tobacco industry or terrorist activity and that they are legal U.S. Citizens (requirements similar to a Driver's License).
Closely monitor the amount grown by each of these growers to ensure that they aren't importing it from other countries, but are, in fact, growing it in the U.S.
Tax the income of these companies heavily and then tax the actual product at the point of sale in a similar way to that which cigarettes are taxed.
Set a legal age limit, likely 18, on the use of marijuana and the clear guidelines for punishing those that violate the law or those that operate a motor vehicle under the influence.
This would create millions of new jobs, increase the demand for food products, and make medicinal marijuana for the numerous uses, legal.
All positive, if you ask me. But hey, that's my opinion. Not to mention the roots, seeds, and actual plant have plenty of other uses. |

Yes,it would have a profound effect on out economy, and anyone who says otherwise is simply in denial or really has no clue as to how incredibly popular and important this commodity is. |

I think it should be legal but only to an extent. Needs to have an age limit, just like ciggs and liquor. You should have to provide proof of income as well, like a paycheck, ss check, trust fund, something of that nature. Welfare checks and food stamps wouldn't be valid for proof of income. |

It is a great idea ,BUT... It will never happen, The DEA makes SO much money from the untraceable drug cash that they "Confiscate". To legalize pot or any or all drugs would reduce the profit margin by approx. 650% .The DEA/Police would not find rooms stacked to the ceiling with all that free $$. Most people are not aware that all the cash,Mansions,.homes, cars, boats, etc. Every thing that is taken from the drug dealers becomes the direct property of the DEA. This HUGE amount of cash and assets is used to fund Bonuses, penions and co. cars for the drug agents. This is also tied to the courts and drug laws. By sending NON violent drug users to prison they keep the prisons full and the contractors who make $millions$ Building and supplying our "For Profit prison system are the same people who donate huge piles of cash to political campaign funds. You see, our Gov. is all ready making Billions from drugs, They would loose Billions by making them legal . Drugs are and were a victimless crime until the drug laws drove up the price of drugs so high that people are willing to murder for control of the business. So the all drug crimes and murders are the fault of those who claim to protecting us from what would be victimless business had our constitution not been violated when the freedom to use drugs was made a crime |

I have heard all of the reasons for legalizing marijuana. To date I have not heard one valid reason other than clearing up the courts and jails. As for a means to gain taxes. Texas has a tax on marijuana. No questions asked. Just pay your tax get your stamp and move on without getting caught with the dope. But here is the problem. There is a massive black market; which will be near impossible to close. The US has been trying for decades to stop the dope trade and to date its been one failure after another. Therefore, even if it is legalized we are back to square one with the black market. |

actually many "stoners" are upstanding business men and women and most people that smoke don't allow anyone else to know that they do it.
even if you ignore marijuana and legalize hemp which can be made into building materials, fuel, flour and many other things which you can not get high off of that are illegal but sturdy, cheap and completely green, it alone could start to turn around our economy, now you add marijuana to that legalization and you can see results almost instantly since the supply and demand is already in place. it would be the fastest and cheapest way to see results while being completely green. plus right now my daughter can get her hands on a bag of weed 10x's easier than she can get cigarettes, I'd rather it be legal and regulated than easy to get and cheap. |

The truth is- people who buy this drug aren't usually the ones with legal, normal jobs. So yeah- it'll circulate money to some extent- but it will also cause robbery and violence to get out of control too. Keep the drugs out of supermarkets. Jump-start the economy buy going to the movies and buying regular things. And i totally agree with the first comment- marijuana is usually used by the laziest people. (who don't have jobs to afford buying it- so they steal it or do "favors" in return for it.) |

good, won't happen -- the middle is moving that way but still has aways to go -- there aint a lot of people murdering for marijuana. I live in Mendocino county and it is estimated as 1/2 the economy. It is practically legal and the people growing it are young, middle, old white land owners and if you saw them in the city you would not have a clue |
