Say "I will write!"
"I'll visit, send me the application as soon as you can"
"I'm not going to bail out on you!"
And then follow through.
Check out http://www.prisontalk.com for a lot of information about how to help and how to deal. |

Tell him to get soap on a rope. If he did the crime he has to take the punishment. All crimes produce a victim of some degree! |

Don't bend over.
Is this victimless crime drugs? If so, tell him he can get help on the inside if he wants and stop the woe is me crap.
Just say goodbye and that you'll miss him. And write him as much as you can. Don't forget about him. That's what most people do when people go to prison and it's the worst thing you could say = nothing at all. |

give him or her some comfort and try not to dampen his/her spirits. say, "take care" and hug in the end. |

First: There is no such thing as a victimless crime.
But let's ignore that for a second.
Second: No one ever serves their full sentences anymore unless it's a Federal offense.
Try, "I'll see you in 3-5 years".
Third: If the friend is "facing" it, that means it is probably the maximum sentence. Tell the friend to plead to a lesser offense, be a good boy in prison and you'll see him/her in about 12-18 months.
Fourth: Why not give us more details? |

"I will be here for you ALL the way, because I am your friend"!!! It will be hard for him and as a friend, you need to make the commitment to write him VERY regular, like once a week. He not going to have the money YOU do. So, $10 a month on the books would be a blessing and show you a real friend. Magazine subscription, Bible (with a few nude women pics hid in the binding). Maybe a visit once a month, if, you can. You say he your friend, well, now you have 15 years to prove it!!!!!! BUT, with the prison math, he could be out sooner! ;-) |

you don't get 15 years for a "victimless crime". but to answer your question, you say "i will see you later". Not goodbye, but a statement that you will write them and see them when you can. |

He will have to be Patient ..
Patience can be obtained by being closer to God by worshiping during the prison period. |

lots of "cute" answers here, how about a practical one? buy your friend a couple of books - Behind Bars: Surviving Prison by Jeffrey Ian Ross + Stephen C. Richards " and Prison Etiquette: The Convict's Compendium of Useful Information by Philip Metres
these two books can be purchased for less than the price of a carton of cigarettes and are much more valuable.
i hope this helps |

I would have to know more of the specifics, but if it is truly a victimless and non-violent crime I would tell your friend to get himself a GOOD lawyer that specializes in this type of law. Do not let him/her settle for a "Public Pretender" even if he is paying the laywer for the next 20 years it would be better than almost 20 years behind bars. Prison is not a place for someone who is not a Violent criminal, because survival inside is witout a doubt going to turn your friend into a violent criminal. In fifteen years of institutionalization he/she will lose any remnants of civility he has to a total and neccessary return to animal instincts and behavior. He/she will be treated like an animal by the gaurds and the other inmates. In prison EVERYONE is a dog, your friend's only choice will be wether he is going to try and be top dog or the dog that cleans up all the other dogs puke. I have spent some time inside one of these so called rehabilitation facilities and it is not for any one who would like to remain human. I was fortunate to have a Lawyer who got my conviction overturned on appeal I was granted a re-trial and aquitted the second time, I was only their for 9 months, I don't know who I would be today if I had had to serve the 12 years I was originally sentenced to.(I was paying my Lawyer until 2 years ago but it was the best $70,000.00 I ever spent) I know for sure I would not have become less of a criminal, just more of one who then would die rather than go back. I was there for 9 months 20 years ago and I would still rather die than go back.
I don't know what you can tell your friend other than goodbye if they have already been convicted and sentenced. |

drugs, huh? hopefully friend doen't have extensive criminal record. if not wait for good plea deal.(not the first offer) and hopefully it's probation or just a couple of yrs.just be upbeat and have fun with him(if not still in jail) until he is sentenced. but stay out of trouble. |

"I love you and I'll write to you." Keep your promise, write to him/her. It can make a real difference in their life if you take a little bit of time and stay in contact. Sending money is a big help, as well and it doesn't need to be a lot. |
