What do you think about the legalization of Gay marriage in California?
Find answers to your legal question.

What do you think about the legalization of Gay marriage in California?

Do you accept and support this, or do you condemn and abhor it. How do you think this will affect the future of Gay rights for the United States? Will other states follow California's path? How will Christians react to this? Just express your thoughts here.

Let's get the facts straight. Gay Marriage wasn't legalized. The ban against it was overturned as unconstitutional.

I hope it becomes legal, since it is a right.

Marriage is not solely a religious institution, though christians want to think so. They've stolen so many holidays and called them theirs, why not marriage too? Marriage was going on long before the bible fiction was written.

I think anyone with a negative issue about gay marriage, must not have much of a marriage themselves if something like that would threaten them so much. I can't see how it would even touch their lives.

I think a Supreme Court ruling called Loving v Virginia (legalizing interracial marriage) also stated that a marriage in one state must be recognized in all states. So if gay marriage in California becomes legal, constitutionally then those marriages will have to be recognized in all states as well.

Hand me the popcorn, this is going to get interesting.

Simple. Gays getting married and having the same rights is the same thing as African Americans drinking out of the same water fountain as caucasions. I support gay marriage, I'm hoping other states will follow suit now.

As everyone opinion counts but what i think is that let them get married, it never affected my life nor it will affect me. For some reason with the "words of god" say that is an abominations easy to say to someone you hate for no reason, also meaning people having nothing else to do just go hating others. As it it will be unknown what is really the word of god even i do have my own beliefs way apart from the church, specially the Christian church in which is mentioned here, where thanks to the "word of god" and the bad reputation it have, we lost over 1'000 years thanks to the Christian dark ages, but it is good that up to date i can see a lot of people that are mature and are respectful.

And up to date we will never know what is with us or out there, and if there is really a super power that created all as what mostly is called faith, but what if the day comes and everyone is caught with their pants down and all we believed on wasn't the things that we hoped for.

Just let them live their lives. As same we live our lives in peace. Just blame someone or bash someone that killed someone or hurted someone not someone that hasn't done something wrong.

I say let them get married, its not going to hurt anyone.

I think it's great! This county is not the same uniformed county as it was! new generations have new ideas and it is all about expressing ourselves in order to prosper and cherish peacefully in this ever changing world!!! I say hurray!!! It's about time, let all the gays live and let live in a loving way! I can't wait until everyone has the same rights as the next person in the USA! We are a great country besides all the politics that are representing us! Next time as a nation, we will vote for a smarter more wide eyed president with paper trails...

I can't think of any other reason to be against gay marriage other than not liking people that are gay. Last time I checked that's called discrimination. Since we live in a country that legally frowns on discrimination, gay marriage show be legal. I don't feel this way because I'm gay. I feel this way because I'm not a bigot.

democrats in 2008!
I am so thrilled about it!! So happy!
Marriage is about love, not gender.
It makes me proud to call myself a Californian!!!!

This is excellent news from my state's Supreme Court!!!!!!

I can't say that I'm too surprised, however, since I knew that one day this would happen here. After all, this is California...a place that I consider to be this country's most tolerant and diverse state.

Thus far, 27 states have passed constitutional amendments banning gay marriage in the United States. Hopefully as time goes on and we become more open-minded, there will one day be 50.

If I live to be 100 I will never comprehend why any individual would even feel the NEED to stand between two mature human beings who have the desire to legalize their love.

I accept it 100 % When it was put to a vote in 2000 it was struck down but, now there is many more younger voters who are way more liberal and we have a Governor and many California Mayors some even Republican who are for Gay marriage. California always seems to be the starting ground of everything and I think other states will follow it may not be for 5 to 10 years. Once it is nationwide the Goverment will love that because now they can tax us like the way married couples have been taxed.
As for Christians some will be for it and some against I'm thinking the majority will be against.

Well, as a secularist, I certainly wouldn't make the argument on the basis of the 'word of God'. I would, however, point out that a good many things that run contrary to the Christian definition of God _are_ in fact legal.

Here's an interesting consideration: most religions condemn marrying outside of the religion. In Christianity, for example, they call it an 'unequal yoke' or something like that. Should a free country then consider banning cross-religious marriages? I'm sure most people would see that the government overstepping your bounds - regardless of your personal beliefs about the legitimacy or acceptability of such marriages. God's will is, in this case, not logically a barrier.

What about the 'will of the people'? Well, the Jim Crow-era laws against black-white marriages certainly had a lot of public support in southern states (30% of Americans still - in 2008 - oppose miscegenation). yet I think we can see where, in this case, the 'will of the people' is irrelevant. In fact, in a town where 99.9% of all people are against 'mixed marriages', we should revel in the fact that a couple can still thumb their nose against contemporary morality and proudly get married. Public opinion should never have an effect on human rights.

I live in a country - Canada - where full marriage equality has existed for several years now. It was guaranteed by a Supreme Court decision at a time when most provinces had already legalised it. Those provinces who didn't - one super-conservative province in particular - were marginalised and finally forced to accept the tide of change. This will happen in the US as well. Slowly, progressive states will come to their senses, and then the more regressive ones will be forced to accommodate the change. As it was with anti-miscegenation laws.

So hats off to the California Supreme Court for its decision not to let religious bullying overtake their commitment to the fundamental freedoms it is their job to preserve.

i think that at first, it will be hard to take on the racist people, but all in all, it will be equal and everyone will accept it, its alot like slavery, some states accepted it, some didnt, in the end, we are one

I think it's wonderful that people can marry whoever they love. It should be legal in all 50 states. I think, and hope, that this will be the beginning of many more states starting to see the light and legalizing gay marriage.

mll1013
Speaking strictly from a democratic process, there's something that seems ironic, when a 57% majority of 7 people can override the 61% majority of millions who voted to ban gay marriage. Personally, I agree with the dissenting opinion in that the people had spoken, and as such there was no reason or premise for this landing in the state Supreme Court.

The question, moving forward, is whether Cal will have the support to change its constitution and overturn the Supreme Court now.

It's so sad that people find gay marriage disgusting and un-holy. They don't choose to be, they just are! I accept it completely. I don't believe that in ten years gay couples will be able to marry in any state in the USA, but it's a start.

The Christians are gonna hate it (exactly why it won't happen) and even if it does happen, It won't effect anybody else. I support this. I think that there is nothing wrong with being gay. But this isn't going to happen.

oddcat1978
Gay Marriage is a bad example for children, and gay people have no business raising children. I do not hate gay people one bit, I just can't respect their union as equal to that of my wife and myself's union. That being said its not an issue I even really care about. It doesn't affect my life one way or the other. I really can't see why people get so fired up about it.

Even if you support gay marriage (which I don't), you can't be supportive of extreme judges overturning the will of the voters. California...one of the most liberal states...already voted that gay marriage should be illegal. With as nuts as Californians are (slightly self-deprecating...I was born in SoCal), they got something right. But then 4 out of 7 judges decide "oh, no we should overturn the will of the people". One judge who voted against this even wrote that they are a strong supporter of gay marriage, but voted no because the people had spoken. Now that's a good judge. Personal feelings should not affect the interpretation of laws as a judge (unlike what happened with the 4 other "judges").

Remember, the basic premise of liberals and the Democratic party is that people are too stupid to think for themselves and the state should take care of them. If Californians don't pass the constitutional ammendment this year, maybe that will be proof of their stupidity.
