Presuming this is not the high court of New York, but a federal court or a normal state system. The lower court handles the trial. If the losing party appeals the decision, and this sounds like a civil case, the appeals court is next, and the review the lower court decision. They affirm or REVERSE the lower or trial court. Then, whomever loses can appeal to the Supreme Court. The Supreme can affirm or reverse the Court of Appeals. So, if in your case the lower court found for the plaintiff, then the Court of the Appeals, affirmed or reversed the trial court, then the Supreme Court Reversed the Court of Appeals, so if the Court of appeals agreed with the Trial Court, the Trial court is reversed.
This case reminds me of the case against Hustler Magazine where they drew a picture one of the Tele Evangelist. The trial court ruled for the preacher, and the Court of Appeals affirmed and was reversed by the US Supreme Court.

It means the same thing as in any other context: Whatever happened before, now it's the other way. The Court of Appeals in this case ruled that the plaintiff wins and the defendant has to pay money because of the defamatory ad. The Supreme Court here ruled that the First Amendment protected the ad because a parody is a form of free speech. So it reversed the Court of Appeals, meaning that what the Court of Appeals said is wrong according to the Supreme Court. Instead of the plaintiff winning and getting money, the defendant wins and doesn't have to pay. |
