As others have said, it does stand for 'versus' but you need to know that it is improper to say 'versus'. So, "Smith v Jones" 2008 would be said as "Smith and Jones 2008". |

I think it stands for the Roman Numeral 5.
I don't have a cite, but I remember that movie, Godzilla Five The Smog Monster and it made me think...it's probably like all those court cases.
By the way....does anyone know what a Smog Monster is? I know it's not a monster that came from smog, but what it is that thing?
