Are you applying for state disability or social security?

If social security, you have to prove your condition, combined with your education and work background, keeps you from gainful employment, which is usually earning enough to get by. (Paying minimal rent, food, etc.) You have to submit doctors reports saying you cannot work at all and it has to be for at least a year. They may send you to their own doctor.

Expect to be turned down the first time. Then you do a paper appeal and will probably be turned down again. (They have a book of conditions that are automatic approvals, if you aren't in the book, they usually turn you down.) You appeal again and this time you have a hearing in front of a judge. You should probably have a lawyer at this time. Lawyers cannot charge you until and unless you win and the law limits what percentage they can charge. Unless things have changed, that amount is 25% and the judge has to approve it. The judge can reduce that amount if the judge doesn't think the attorney earned it. There is one level of appeal after the hearing level. This is also paper.

Frankly, on just reading a description of your condition, it doesn't sound like it would keep you from working. Proving it is bad enough to keep you from working will be very difficult. You need a dynamite letter from your doctor.You pretty much have to be covered with the stuff and not respond to treatment.

It used to be all done in about six months, but I've heard it can take 18 months now.

The guidelines are extremely strict. You basically have to be in danger of death to qualify for permanent disability. There is a website with a list of criteria.

Go to s.s office fill out the consent papers so they can contact ur doctors and get ur files weru can prove ur sickness after that they would get all ur info review it ansd then send u letter stading what u qualify for either s.s.d. or ssi from there they would ask references of family or friends who ever knows about ur true sikness and they have to answer a lot of questions and notes ( u have to fill it out too ) and afte that just wait for me it took 3mths I get ssi I haven't worth long enough to get ssd I got refferd by my doc .... I laughed when he told me to go ... yes I'm sik but that never did cross my mind to b disable I got ssi for mood disorder and I got a bak up check for the 3mths that I had apply ... oh forgot to mention u have to go a evaluation from Social security and if u don't ur case would b denied and just wait and then they would send u. Letter to take proof of address bank staments in whiich I would say not to take cuz they ur bakmoney based on what ui have on the bank I didn't receive a check for 24.00 $ I was over the limit (2,000) for individual disability I'm married w kids but my huby is illegal and I couldn't get nothing 4 him or my kids that's why I'm as individual its easy well it was for me cuz I have a huge doc file !
