What happens to the person's premarriage assets (e.g. bank acct balances) when a person dies intestate?

When a person dies intestate (In california), what happens to the assets prior to her marriage? There wasn't any prennup agreements on assets before marriage in case of divorce. Then in case of intestate, will those assets (cash, 401K, investments in particular) be viewed as commonly owned assets (which will be 100% inherited by the surviving spouse) or will it be viewed as separate asset (which 50% will be inherited by the descent's parent as she only has a step child)?
