They can piddle off outside and wait till the cig is smoked!
However I don't allow smoking in my house - only because my daughter suffers asthma and I have white walls (must reseal the padding..) |

the way the smoking ban operates in Scotland is if workman etc comes to work in your home you must not smoke at least one hour before their arrival. |

He could ask you not to smoke, but presumably if he felt that strongly about it he would sort that out before agreeing to take the job. |

He doesn't have the right to stop you from smoking, but he can refuse to do the job on health and safety grounds. |

I bet you he probably would because you have to remember that to him you are putting his health at risk,it would have to be a fairly petty workman though in my books but i probably wouldn't smoke in front of him anyway, lets face it you get shunned for it now and i would be too embarrassed to smoke. |

I guess he would expect you not to smoke, by law you place would be his work place, so i would say you couldn't smoke in his presents, unless he smokes too, in which case you can put the kettle on, make a nice cup of tea and moan about the government interference in your life's. |

Depending on where you live, but basically the tradesman have the right to leave if you refuse to stop smoking, he can still charge you for the undone work since you were responsible for his early departure.
When you hire someone to work at your home you are responsible of providing a healthy and safe enviroment.
Jusk ask before hiring anyone. |

Possibly or he can decline to do the work. Our local council have said that if a tenant requires maintenance work done in their house or flat ,they must not smoke while the tradesmen are on the premises. They are also told not to have a cigarette within half an hour of the expected arrival of the workmen. Why not be sensible like the majority of us and give it up. |

the life of a smoker will be very different than it was. tradesmen are not normally daily visitors so im sure it wont be hard to not smoke while one is in the house. you can have a smoke anytime after hes gone. |

IF A REPAIR PERSON COMES TO YOUR HOUSE AND YOU ARE A SMOKER, HE HAS NO RIGHT TO TELL YOU YOU CANNOT SMOKE THERE. HE ALSO HAS A RIGHT OT WALK OUT OF THE HOUSE ANYTIME YOU LIGHT UP AND TAKE A BREAK UNTIL THE SMOKE CLEARS. HE WOULD ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT OT LEAVE THE JOB UNFINISHED IF THE SMOKE BOTHERS HIM THAT MUCH. (I.E. ASTHMATIC) THE CHOICE IS YOURS, GET THE JOB DONE AND WAIT FOR THAT SMOKE OR GO OUTSIDE TO DO IT FOR THE DURATION. NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK. |
