He's sentenced for each crime. Also, it's possible one of the sentences might be overturned or reduced--so, it's necessary to specify the sentence for each. |

He CAN serve both sentences. The question is, are they served concurrently or sequentially. If the former, then he "pays" for both deaths at the same time. If the latter, then even if he finished paying for one sentence earlier, through good behaviour, etc, he still would have to serve the minimum part of the second life sentence.

I t just goes to show you how f'd up the justice system is. If you get one life sentence, you will be released early. But if you have 2 life sentences, you might actually make it in jail to the age of 55. Sad but true how the US justice system is failing us. |

A life sentence is 20 years, 2 life sentences would be 40 years. With the Libs running the show that would be about 3 years with good behavior.It really is unfair to lock them up in such a mean place for any longer than that. |

In some states life means exactly that...in til you die. In that case the second life term is just an acknowledgement of his guilt in the second count.
Depending on his state and the charge, even with "life" there may be a chance of parole, in, say, 20 years. Then it matters whether or not the judge sentenced him on both counts consecutively or concurrently.
If he was senteced concurrently, he's basically serving both sentences at the same time, so he's still eligible for parole in 20 years.
If he was sentenced to serve the sentence for both counts consecutively that means, only after count 1 is served does the sentence for count two start.
He starts serving count one in prison. 20 years later he's eligible for parole on count one. THEN the sentence for count two kicks in, so it's ANOTHER 20 years before he's eligible for parole on count 2......
...so, if he's serving consecutively that's 40 years before he might get out. |
