People are always going on about people's rights and etc, is it really fair that we advertise the need to live free but still be against euthanasia? If we can choose how we want to live, why is it so shameful to choose how we want to die?

It's a tough issue, and I am personally, undecided. But on the "anti" side of the equation: First, it's a slippery slope argument. That life is sacred and that this will lead to further legislation giving doctors the right to decide to terminate patients based on some "quality of life" criteria.
More compelling to me, though, is the idea that it would lead to pressure on older people to terminate their own lives in some cases. "Gosh grandpa, this medical care sure is expensive, and we could sure use the money...if there's anything left once you go..." |

It's not so shameful I feel to die in dignity. In Switzerland you can make this choice- you do not need to be ill either. Although this seems a little strange to me at first I would appreciate the basic respect to decide when I've had enough. It has already been recognized as a human right by the UN in Switzerland and it will only take time before we have a right to die when we feel we are at our end.

It takes away a chance for insurance and credit card companies to make some money off of a long running terminal illness.
The whole religion thing is just grist for the mill for the public at large. When it becomes too cost prohibitive to keep a cancer patient treated, the plug will be pulled. |
