In which legal system? Solicitors are usually the ones that work directly with clients and/or on more minor issues, barristers usually do representation in court. If you are going to court, you normally get a solicitor first and then they will find a barrister for you. However, solicitors can also represent you in court if they choose.

Barristers represent clients in court, and sometimes provide specialist advice on particular legal matters. Solicitors provide more or less all other legal services. Only solicitors tend to be instructed by clients directly, with barristers instead being instructed by the client's solicitors.
Of course in some legal systems, there is no formal distinction between the two. This is called a fused profession, while a system in which the two are separate is called a split profession. |
