What is the justification for police having authority and power over other people?

To maintain the assumption of law and order. What gets me is there those that make the laws are so far removed from the reality of how things really are. It would seem as if they are on the verge of crowd control. I don't know how it is where you are, but when you see entire Interstates connected with video and most intersections, one might wonder why? Look and see who profits off the law and the commissary/food for the penal system and know that 1/4 of the prison population world wide is inside the states. Most cities seem to be running out of money and where do you think it will come from? Children of the middle class, perhaps? Do not freak out probable cause is what makes it acceptable, does not mean that it is; this could be one point of defense towards the case. It all depends on what your definition of is is:)

there are stupid and evil people out there and the question goes more towards what right do those people have to kill, steal, and rape others

Just how would Law Enforcement (Policing) work if the Officers didn't have some measure of authority and power over other people?

Because the sheep that call themselves americans have given our freedoms away for the promise of security.

It is not OK. We do accept it however. But I believe the tide is shifting. I think that the police have gotten too arrogant and complacent with their power and it will soon be taken away. People are tired of being harrassed and made to feel scared in the presence of cops and the freedom of information and especially video these days is not helping their image much.

I believe it was Churchill who said, "those who would willingly trade freedom for security will soon find they have neither."
