In the UK there is a statutory punishment for all convicted adult murderers: life imprisonment. However, this does not mean the convict will actually spend the rest of their life in prison.
When passing sentence the judge will specify a minumum term to be served. For a "normal" murder this might be quite low - 8 or 10 years. For a serial killer or a child killer this might be much higher. Once this term has been served the prisoner can be released on licence by the parole board, if they are satisifed he is no longer a danger to the public. However, they can be recalled to prison at any time in the interests of public safety.
In exceptional cases the judge may make a whole life order. In this case there is no chance of release. |

it has to be assumed you speak of the UK situation, well following the last group of sentences passed down by the courts for capital crimes i.e. murder, the perpetrator is on a good thing,
A life sentence here, seems to indicate a minimum term served in prison.
We have seen sentences passed down that are not adequate for the crimes committed, No quite frankly we, must be the laughing stock of the civilised world as far as justice is concerned.
