What is your opinion on Legally owning a gun for your families protection?

I DON"T like guns, As a matter of fact I hate them! They kill people, But if someone breaks in your house and they are going to hurt your family, Then what would your opinion be about safetly owning one? I have to say that my opinion has changed, This world has changed! It's no longer safe,I'm not terrified but I do think about if someone was to break in my house what could we do to defend our lives!

I am very similar to you... My husband grew up with a gun in his home and knows how to shoot and he feels very comfortable with guns. I on the other hand have zero experience with guns and up until recently it’s been my choice to live in a gun free home. I’ve recently changed my mind too. We've decided to purchase a hand gun for the same reasons as you, protection in an emergency situation.
We plan on taking the gun safety class (age appropriate for ourselves AND our children) and making the shooting range a regular activity. That way we are prepared instead of panicked in an emergency/ intruder type of a situation (and yes, we’d ALSO call 911… but NOT instead).
I'd have to agree that I'd feel safer knowing that we have more protection than just a baseball bat. I'd just like to be protected and have the ability to protect my family… No Matter What!
Thank goodness we’re Americans and we have the RIGHT to make this decision for ourselves!!! Some CHOOSE no… some CHOOSE yes… and ALL of us have the right to change our minds! Either way the point is… we get to choose! :o) |

guns dont kill people...people with guns kill people
get an alarm system for your home
get a trained dog
if you want to get a gun take ALL the training you can get and let family do the same
..I never liked guns either, but now I'm in the military. But after I had training and used guns I now own a few. i also feel safer at home with them |

I'm just saying...

Just the fact that gun ownership is a legal venture makes all homes safer.
Crooks don't know which houses have guns and which don't. They have to plan on every house having a gun.
We have several. I wouldn't live without one. I think that they are needed to feel safe and secure. |

The old saying is guns don't kill people, people kill people. Truth is, owning a gun is no different than owning a car, knife, etc. Basically anything can be turned into a weapon and used to harm another person. The only difference is you have to hope and trust that other people are going to be responsible with how they use them. I personally am in favor of owning guns. I have several myself. I hope and pray that I never have to use any of mine to protect my self or my family but if the time comes and I have to, I'll be ready. |

I, and fortunately our founding fathers, KNOW its a god given right.
Your family, and property you use countless hours of your life energy acquiring, deserve nothing less than to be fully defended. |

As I'm sure you've heard, guns don't kill people; people kill people. I think if anyone wants to own a gun for protection, and stores it and ammunition completely away from children, then it is a powerful deterrent to anyone who breaks into your home. My father knew a woman who was grabbed and shoved into a car by a strange man. She asked him if she could smoke a cigarette, and he said OK. She reached into her purse, and pulled out her legally owned and permitted hand gun. He pulled over and let her out. The absolute best thing he was planning to do was rob her, and he was probably planning a lot worse. I bet she doesn't hate guns! |

We own a gun exactly for this reason. If anybody breaks into our home we are able to defend ourselves. I'm all for them!! |

The world was never that safe. I'm a rural guy who grew up with guns, so I never did see them as evil things that kill people. I know in fifty years of shooting, I've never come close to hurting anybody, and the same is true of everybody I know, military and police experience excepted. And as an emergency physician, I see a lot of other things that kill more often than guns: motor vehicles, for instance.
Guns are just tools, and can be used or misused just like anything else.
But the important thing is this: if you value human life, you have to value its protection, and there's no practical way to save your life in some situations than to take your assailant's. That has always been morally proper, and the gun allows the weak to have a chance against the strong. |

I believe in the second amendment right of a person being able to own a gun. I think a person owning a gun for a family's protection is the prime reason for one to own a gun, besides hunting. I have the right to shoot a person if they enter my home and are a threat to my family or my friends in my home.
And FYI... as the saying goes, guns don't kill people, people kill people. If a gun is sitting on the table, its not going to kill a person. Someone has to get up and pull the trigger for the gun to work. This is like saying matches and lighters cause fires, or that fast food is killing people. Its the person that kills and the person's actions that kill, not the object used. |

A gun is just metal, plastic and gun powder. You can't apply morality to an inanimate object.
I'm not scared someone is going to break in my house, i'm also not scared of getting in a car accident. But, guess what, if someone breaks in my house they'll get shot and if someone hits my car the insurance company will pay for it.. |

I would not only own a gun for protection, but for fun as well (shooting ranges, people). "They kill people" Uhm. Yeah, the gun goes up and shoots someone on its own. PEOPLE are the cause of other people's deaths, not the device used to kill. Stop sideskirting the issue and blaming inanimate objects for humanity's myriad flaws. You can kill people with knives and other **** too, ya know. Wanna outlaw knives now, too? It's the second amendment and it's an important right.
As Mao Zedong said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." There's a reason we have a right to weapons, you know. |

Not only should all law abiding people get weapons training, it should be an affirmative duty to kill the violent criminal. If you come upon a carjacking and fail to fire your weapon at the carjacker, you should suffer a $250 fine, and get training in your duty as a citizen to blast the criminal on the spot. |

Seeing how it is in the Constitution, what is you opinion on free speech? Personally, some people say some of the dumbest things, so I don't think they should be able to. They might offend other people so shouldn't we do away with free speech?
Really, our founders not only recognized the inherit right to protect ourselves from government (2nd Amendment), they also understood that protecting unpopular speech was a necessity for the Republic to flourish. |

Guns and alcohol don't mix. until we have a handle on alcohol and drug abuse, there has to be extreme tough gun laws. Only those who present capability and have no prior convictions, who prove to be honorable and desreving of the right to bear arms, should be allowed to bear arms.the rest as we can see.Kill themselves innocent children and all around degenerates. |

You're not "safe" anyway. The person breaking in could be better armed than you. They could take your gun and use it against you. There's no real "safe."
That's life. |

I am happy to say that I have no experience of guns. I live in scotland. The police only use them when faced with gun crime.
I am aware that the bigger UK cities are having an increase in gun crime.. but id have to say I prefer not to have any close contact with guns. I fact I think Id rather run the risk of me being shot or my family being shot than actulally shooting someone or even have the power to.
Dont see much pointin owning a gun if your not prepared to use one.
I do not like the idea of guns in homes as i guess if they are not around people cannot get shot, but thats my culture and i am aware for some culture it is natural to have guns at home.

I agree with you! The lie about "guns don't kill people, people kill people" is just pointless and a lie. A lie created by evil Republicans, Conservatives, and rednecks to help them shoot "coons". Racist bull. Nooo!!! Don't get a gun! They kill people and you are helping out those evil gun owners by buying one. :'( They are the reason why murders happen! If someone breaks into your house, what do you think 911 is for? Wait for the police to come help! They will assess the situation and handle it better than us civilians can :) |
