Being a non-smoker, I really like the idea. The ban on smoking in bars and restaurants has been effect in NY (USA) for a few years now and I personally enjoy going out now. I understand that smokers feel their rights are being infringed on, but those same smokers often do not take into account that they infringe on the rights who do not smoke to breathe clean air.
It is an issue that has no clear-cut answer, but I think that when an infringement or taking away of rights happens, it should be done to protect the health of people, which is what the ban is for. |

i wonder how many of you who think the smoking ban is wonderful also curse the patriot act,NSA surveillance and all the rest of the left wing blather. |

This is just another in a long list of ways the government wants to infringe on every aspect of a person's life. And they say that people are parinoid of the government. I wonder why? |

It is cool, I smoke, but reality really hit when My friend just passed away from lung cancer and never picked up a cigarrette in her life. She was exposed to 2nd hand smoke. It makes you think twice before smoking a cigarette in front of your children or others......you could be killing them without noticing |

it has been banned for a few years now in New York. as a smoker i agree and disagree. pubs/ bars should allow smoking or have a seperate section where it could be allowed. i have no problem not smoking in resteraunts and other public buildings as i do not really enjoy the smell of smoke while im eating and i have no desire to push my smoke off on others. i respect those who choose not to smoke as it is their decision of course- but i do respect smokers right to choose to smoke, we know the dangers etc but it is a CHOICE. |

I'm glad its been implemented, smokers are very very selfish - why should a non-smoker have to breathe in dirty air and run the risk of getting cancer just because they want to spark up?
If they want to kill themselves fair enough but non-smokers should have a choice as to whether they want to be around the or not. |

In eastern Canada (and many other places) we have smoking banned for all public places.
Personally, I love it. I can breathe everywhere I go and bring my baby girl to public places like restaurants and shopping centers without worry. Last time I went to a bar(which was ages ago) I didn't smell like a chimney coming home. Was much better.
It has been an adjustment for owners of the establishments. They've lost customers; espically for the bars. |

In several states in the United States, it has also been a success. Here in Florida, i am glad they did that. especially for people like me that have allergies and asthma. I view the smoking ban positively because first of all i dont want to be eating dinner and have someone smoking away next to me. |

I'ma smoker and I look forward to it. I like pubs with fresh air. I also look forward to conversations with the other ostracised smokers standing outside. Finally I'll have something in common with the pretty girls that smoke and have excuse to talk to them. |

as a smoker i can tell you you'll get used to it. in new york they started it three years ago and the only time it really stinks now is on rainy days otherwise it is no big deal |

smoking is bad for everyone concerned, but to ban it totally is wrong, there are worse things than smoking, like drugs and drinking and driving.....who has the right to say that you have to smoke in a certain area? it is dangerous to your health and they have been warned, but it is their life and their health, they have no one to blame but themselves !!!!!!!!!! |

Its a good thing, if you want to kill yourself don't let it affect others.
There are too many ignorant smokers around although they have the right to smoke don't we have the right not to have toxic fumes that can seriously damage our health blown around us by other people.
I used to smoke but I still understood this even then |

In New Mexico, USA, you can't smoke anywhere in public! In our town it's even illegal to smoke standing outside in a public place. I think it's ridiculous! It amazes me, with the DUI rate, that I can't smoke a cigarette after going out to dinner, but I can have 3-4 drinks and get in my car! Over the weekend here, they arrested 37 people for DUI and most of them had 3 or 4 prior arrests, but what happened, nothing!!! More people die from alcohol related issues than smoking but we're the ones who pay! |

It works nicely here in California as well. No longer do you have to inhail someone else's poison when you go out to eat. |

Great idea. Now smokers can poison themselves and not everyone else, too. |

i am a non smoker after being a smoker for many years. i see the good side being yes, i don't want the second hand smoke now. but the flip side is smokers have rights too, believe it or not. its their right to freedom to smoke. but maybe designated places would be a good thing for BOTH sides :) |

As a smoker, I don't like it. I can appreciate that a lot of people hate the smell and I try to be considerate, but puh-lease, where's the health risk?!
In the USA about 3000 people per year die of 2nd hand smoke. How many of those 3000 people do you suppose lived for 50 years with a chain smoker? Both of my grandmothers died that way. So how many people does that leave who actually die from sitting 3 tables down from someone who has a smoke in a restaurant? Zip. |

I love it. When California was first talking about starting it restaurants were worried about losing business, but they are doing fine. I know I eat out more since I won't be smelling the smoke. The less poison in the air the better. If you want to smoke in your home and stink it up knock yourself out, but I don't want to smell it. |

I'm a strong supporter of the smoking ban, I hate going to public places and being choked by the smoke of inconsiderate smokers.
This was almost passed in my state, but was killed in a subcommitee. |

i cant see the why they would take the smoking out of a bar .... for most people smoking and drinking go hand and hand .... i am a non smoker but i realize if i go out into public there is a chance of a smoker being present .. i have no problem with them smoking in a designated area . but to take it from bars and pubs this is injustice and i am a non smoker... |

It's worked great here in the states. We've had it for a few years now. Nice to be able to go out and enjoy yourself without breathing in 2nd hand smoke and coming home with your clothes & hair stinking of it. |

Oh, I am so looking forward to it coming into force in the UK. I was in New Zealand when they brought it in and it was so nice to go out and not come back smelling like an ashtray and coughing my guts up. I even asked the bar owners out there what effect it had had on business and they all said it had improved as more families came in. I'm very sensitive to smoke and get asthma type coughing fits around it so I tend not to go into places that are smokey which cuts down where I can go. Bring it on please - quickly. |
