not a whole lot. If you dont like it, get your own place. Its still their home. Youll be the same way with you kids (hopefully). |

The way you might look at it is as a sort of informal lease agreement. You probably do not pay a cash rent, so your parents can rightfully demand the performance of other actions, which can range from the category of chores (taking out the garbage, e.g.) to the category of parental supervision and control (setting rules for acceptable conduct and appropriate companions). Basically, as long as you live in their home rent-free, you are obliged to do as they say or suffer whatever reasonable punishments they may impose. Remember also that the law gives parents more authority than a regular landlord, too -- providing, for instance, for the possibility of corporal punishment without it being considered an assault at law. You can follow their rules or move out. |

You have the right not to listen to your parents and they have the right to kick you out on your a r s e. |

If they still want to live there they do. Once you turn 18, your parents have every right to kick you out of their house. Be good! Trust me, it's a lot harder onyour own than it seems. |

It's not about rights when living at home. It's about rules. Follow there rules or move out. Legally you can leave and go start living on your own. What's more importnant? HAving a free place to live or doing what you want when you want? |

You have the right to be respectful, get a job, pay some rent, and take care of your own things. If not, then you have the right to find some place else to live. |

if you live in your parents you don't have much of any rights move out and you will. if my son is 18 still live with me he will do what i say or he will know where the door is |

Yes you do have to listen to whoever owns the place your living in!
You do have two basic rights
1. Pay rent and follow the rules of the property owners
2. Get out!
I did the later at 18 and have never regretted it. Good luck. |

The right to leave. If you don't like the environment or the way your parents are treating you, pack your bags, get a job, and make your own way. Otherwise, just grin and bear it until you decide to go. |

Only if the 18 year old wants a place to stay. |

Absolutely. They are living under the rules set by the parents. If the 18 year old doesn't like it, they can get a place of their own.
Here is an analogy I hope can help.
You as (I assume) a US Citizen can go to another country. When you go to that country, you still have to follow the laws of that country. Just because you are an independent person, you are still under the rules of the house you are in. |

An 18 year old has the legal right to get a job, leave the house, pay his or her own rent and bills, and be free of parental control.
Please pay particular attention to the order of those events. Not until you have accomplished the first three can you claim any right to the last one. While you live under your parents roof, which they are no longer legally obligated to provide for you, you owe them respect and reasonable compliance with reasonable rules and family courtesies.
If you don't like it, get a move on...you're always welcome to leave... |

Well, the one right you DON'T have is the right to continue living there if your parents want you out. These are, apparently, the conditions they are imposing on you if you want to continue to live there.
A parent always needs to remind their adult children living at home that after they reach 18 y.o., they only continue living there at the will of the parents. Eviction can occur for any violation of rules. |

leagally no, but they parents have the right to kick them out |

You betcha! As long as you live under another's roof, you have to follow their rules. Sorry, but that's the way it works...
If you think that's unfair, then get yourself a good paying job because you'll need it in order to pay rent, bills and buy groceries for a place of your own. This way you'll be able to make your own rules.
If none of the above appeal to you, maybe one of your friends will let you live with them - hopefully they won't live with their folks, too. |

Only the rights your parents give you. It doesn't matter if you are living at home, in a dorm, apartment with a roommate, in the Military there will be restrictions on you. If you live alone in your own home you are probably the most free, but you still have neighbors and maybe a Community Association. You have two choices, as I see it, stay where you are and listen or move out. Be thankful you don't have all the responsibilities of being on your own, paying rent, electric, furniture payments, you name it. Your parents have your best interests at heart. |

if you're 18 then you are an adult, & technically they have no say over anything in your life. But as a matter of respect, you should try to follow their rules while you are living at home. Understandably, if they want you home by 10, then you might try to convince them you are more mature than that..... |

Outside the home you are on your own. But in the house you must follow their rules at any age. But you do have lots of rights. The right to pay rent, clean house, do your own laundry, cook, clean your mess, be courteous, pay for the gas in your own car...and the right to move out |

Move. As long as your parents are furnishing your life with all of your necessities, you aren't living your own life; you are living in theirs. Get a job and move to your own space or cooperate and remain at home. Why would you not want to invest in yourself and grow up. |

If you can't pay the rent for your own place, then you have to listen to your folks. 18 doesn't make you an adult, responsibility does. |

Yep!
Parents are parents for a reason. It is their job to guide you for as long as you need it.
If they are telling you you are hanging with the wrong crowd..give them the benefit of the doubt and take a good hard look at your friends. If they say you are starting down a bad road in life..again, give the benefit of the doubt..and take a hard look.
If you totally disagree with their rules and values..leave! It's their house. Those under that roof are to abide by their rules!
I have a feeling if you move out..it wont be long before you are telling yourself.."it wasnt so bad at home" and wonder how you can work it out to go back. My now almost 20 yr old son is finding that out himself..but his pride is stopping him.
Best wishes! |

It Is Not a Law..But it is respectful if you do .. Now if you are paying rent and buying your own food..in a sense you are the tent and they are a Land lord then they have some rights like the time you come home and that no one is to come in with you because it is their home BUT if you have your own door to your room then No they can't even give that one..so if this is going on to some degree you all can sit down write up a contract and have it Notarized so they legally can't go back on it and if they do you can take them to small claims court as long as you didn't break it first.. also make sure YOU have a copy as well as your folks |

You have the right to remain silent. If you give up this right, anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.
You have the right to an attornry. If you cannot afford an attorney, the state will appoint one for you. |

Number one I don't like how most of you respond to this at all. The way you talk when someone younger than you is not acceptable. The person asked a simple question and you all had to hop on your high horses and get snobby. Answer questions in a respectful way and decently. Mary, she is 18 ; she has the right to who she chooses. I know you love your daughter and wish for her the best safety she could get but that her choice to be with someone she likes. If bad comes to bad all you can do is be there for her and help her when she needs it. |
