What should be done to keep hard drugs out of prisons?

Having been there, there are alot of drugs in prisons and it doesn't help anybody. People who are addicted can get worse and some people get into hard drugs in there.

As far as I saw drugs came in in all sort of ways but I stayed pretty much clear of anything hard. Without stopping visits or stuff like that what do you think could be done to keep drugs out?

I dont know what should be done. What can you do when, familes, friends and even lawyers have been caught slipping drugs passed the guards.

Ive saw people go into prison for petty crimes, and come out herion addics.

Drugs in prisons has a sort of calming affect on inmates (a little easier to control) Blind eyes are the order of the day i'm afraid!!
Drugs = people control...

Have visitors on the otherside of glass so there can be no physical contact between prisoner and visitor. Also have all packages opened and checked before being given to prisoners!!

I think that we would have a better prison system if drugs were legal, there would be less crime, more room in prison for people who should be there, and there would be more money for schools so the maybe less people would end up in prison. Maybe the people should go to rehab instead of prison if they don't have any other charges against them. I personally don't do heavy drugs or want to, but i know people who are in prison for having a addiction problem and should have gone to rehab for a year them maybe a half way house or something its those people who getting the drugs there because there not getting the help they need.

if people want something bad enough they will find a way to get it. there are guards that bring it in because the inmates bribe or threaten them. there isn't really much you can do about it. as long as they can get it they will try.

Why not put them all on heavy doses of Thorazine to keep them all calm? Then they wouldn't seek drugs.

You know how drugs are smuggled into prison.

I know how drugs are smuggled into prison.

The Prison Officers know how drugs are smuggled into prison.

The only thing that will stop drugs going into prison is when

people start suing the government if they become addicts

whilst in prison, for turning a blind eye and allowing hard drugs to be smuggled in.

On saying that it would make prisons a place of punishment

and we couldn't do that to the poor criminals.

Obviously search all prisoners, staff and visitors - they will probably need to have full body cavity searches. Unfortunately the drugs are getting in somehow - either through crooked staff wanting to make a bit of extra money, visitors and even lawyers.

I was put in a homeless unit (i was trying to get away from a violent ex and the council put me in a homeless unit with junkies and women just released from prison), and a lot of the women in there had bfs in prison. They would take drugs up to them all the time and their bfs would send them letters quite clearly with what they wanted brought to them on it - which shows how much mail is monitered in prisons (the prison was s****s prison - so not exactly a low security prison). These women would risk going to prison themselves to make a small amount of money to do it.

Searching and harsher penalties for the people caught smuggling drugs in and the people receiving the drugs would maybe act as a detterant

Search all the prison officers and even the Governor before they are allowed to enter.

Drugs can be stopped any where in the world. Unfortunately it starts at the top, many drugs enter this country through diplomatic bags.

Government doesn't want to stop it because a lot of them are racketeers.

Prisons can stop hard drugs by proper searches of visitors it is so easy all you need is a trained sniffer dog at the entry.

They don't want to stop it.

They don't care if drugs get to kids at young ages as far as they are concerned, the earlier the better.

People who take them are foolish & should see through it, its called manipulation.

Maybe instead of treating people that have a health problem (addiction/abuse) like criminals, we should treat their problem instead.

most problems could be stopped by the government supplying the drugs and making them as pure as possible.
The worst that would happen would be a few deaths, but so what?one less criminal junkie,no loss.
On the positive side, with a govt approved ,free supply, there would be no incentive to commit crime to pay for a fix, with a resultant drop in the number in prison, freeing up room for the real criminals

Tyrus
Offer better, cheaper, and easy to get soft drugs:) LOL

Chuckler
Prisons are supposed to be secure places so what has happened to the security? Searching every visitor is the answer.Or if there was absolutely no personal contact, then things couldn't be smuggled in.

john k
the use of drugs in prisons should be increased, monitored, and regulated
maybe then there would be less rape.

JENNY T
more searches of visitors could be doneto stop drugs entering prisons

Jahpson
we need a drug rehabilitative prison for drug abusers and those in drug related crimes and we need a prison for people who committed crimes againsts human beings. both should be harsh and strict, water and bland food.
