What to do when a "handyman" threatens with a mechanic's lien?

Reasking this question because I just found out that the guy I hired is a handyman, not a licenced contractor.

I hired a handyman to fix up my house. We agreed on a list of items to fix for a lump sum via email. During the course of working on the list, the handyman suggested a few more fixes, but he never brought up additional cost. After work is done, handyman sent me a bill that is twice of the originally agreed price, with a half of the additional amount coming from work not on the original list and the other half from rework needed to get satisfactory results on two original items. I told him by agreeing with the lump sum, I am not going to pay extra for any rework. Also, his new charges has to be more reasonable. Handyman is now threatening me with a mechanic's lien. No contract or paperwork was ever signed, but handyman claim he had "verbal agreement" with me. What is my best course of action?

He cant do anything if he's not licensed. Call his bluff. Pay him for what you agreed. You should have known he wasnt going to do the extra work for free. But he should not be charging you for re-work either.

I think you are saying that you discussed extra work, and he did the extra work, and then he charged you for the extra work. If so, I think you should pay his bill.

What???
If they suggest addtional things to be done why in the hell do you think he wouldn't charge you more? That was your fault.

Pay the man it doesn't matter if he is acontractor or not. Handymen don't have to be a contractor. And depending on where you live if you alloweed him to do something he is not licensed for you will be fined heavily and possibly thrown in jail.

Just pay the man and don't be an ***.

that's tough, you should have told him not to do the extras while or before he did them, now it just looks like you got the extras and your trying to get them for free, if the work was done get another quote and pay him the amount that's cheaper, if he refuses payment then at least you have a legal leg to stand on in court

Take him to court.

pretty sure if he isn't licensed and he brings you to court, he can get into trouble.

your best course of action is to not get handymen. he shouldnt be doing work under the table like that anyway and i sincerely doubt he will bring you to court. anything on paper trumps anything verbal especially since you can just lie anyway. he might come punch you though. so next time get a real person instead.
