What would be the purpose of having someone swear on a bible in court if they are not a believer?

I've worked at courts in three different states and I've never seen someone swear on a bible. People don't even necessarily "swear" or say "so help you, God." anymore, they "swear or affirm" and just say "so help you." There would no purpose, except that its tradition and solemnizes the promise. |

You're not required to swear on a Bible anymore in America. In California courts, there are no Bibles in the courtroom |

Actually, that doesn't happen. No one has to swear on a bible. Everyone is given the option of making an affirmation which has the same effect. |

It's meant to symbolize the solemnness of it. The foundation of the United States was based off of Christian principles so they used a Bible not only as a symbol of that, but also because swearing on it was a sign of complete honesty or followthrough with what was sworn.
Nowadays it would be just the second part, just tradition but also to let the individual know that it's still meant to be a sign of followthrough etc.
Kind of like when people say, "On my mother's grave" as in they wouldn't swear on that unless it was really the truth, same kind of thing. . even if they didn't believe in the Bible, it's just meant to convey that idea. |

The founding fathers did not allow atheists to testify in court at all. For that very reason. They did not consider atheists to be people of good moral character and atheists were not allowed to hold public office. |
