You are a counselor at a community corrections center in a large urban area. One day, your brother decides to visit you from out of town. You take him to a restaurant close to where you live and have a nice meal. As you go to the cashier to pay, you hear a voice say, "I hope you enjoyed your meal, Mr. Smith." You look up and see one of the residents of the community corrections center working behind the register. The inmate goes on to explain that his father owns the restaurant and that he helps him out from time to time. The inmate insists that your meal is free, yet you insist you pay.
After paying, you walk down the street with quite a bit on your mind. What should you do? If you report this to your supervisor, is he really going to believe that out of all the restaurants in the city, you just happened to choose this one owned by the father of an inmate? How do you propose to make your case, or do you?

I guess I just don't get it. Is the inmate not supposed to be out of the center? In that case, report him. Is he not supposed to be working with people? In that case report him. Is he not supposed to be giving you free stuff? Just leave the money, there's nothing else you can do. If the inmate isn't doing any of those things wrong, what's the problem?
Wait- are you not supposed to be interacting with the patients outside of work? If that's the case, then you absolutely tell your boss what happened, that is was by accident, then you don't go back to that restaurant. |
