for school we read an article about an incident where a man came to help a woman being assaulted and consequently ended up being bashed as well. the article also talks about the people who did nothing and the decline in the instict to help others.

The problem is pretty simple. I am one human, perhaps I could evade the speed of another or even several, but I doubt I could evade their strength. Even if I fought a great fight, I'd likely still end up losing to 3+. That is pretty simple logic, now what about criminals who have more than fists? Perhaps they have bats, or guns. What do you do then? SIMPLE! Everyone in the US should have a nice handgun with a gun license. Put the power in the hands of the people and no matter where you go, you will be extremely safe, and crime will go down dramatically. Police are not there to protect you, they cannot. They are too busy sitting in a dark parking lot waiting for someone to drive past 7 MPH over the speed limit.
The police can pick up the pieces, thats about it. I implore the US to give every student at the age of 10-12 a gun learners permit similar to a drivers license. They carry around a gun with an auto locking safety, meaning they have to hand their hand on a button in order for it to fire. After a month and a specific number of rounds fired, they are then able to carry any gun they want. No more 2 kids with guns killed 200 students, no more rape, no more armed robbery, no more crime. |

You take your life in your hands in that situation.
I dial 911, pick up the biggest object I can swing, and start screaming at them to back off the police are on the way and hope for the best.
Edit; I'd do the same for a man who was in the same situation. |

I would definately call 911 or go to the neaest house and ask for help. If you try to help on your own, now-adays they'll shoot you. There are also alot of stories of people who DID make a difference by helping others. |
