I always carry a small swiss army knife with me most of the time, not because it makes me feel safe and all that but because of the sheer handiness of it. I do a lot of photography work and when im opening up film canisters its the most useful tool I have! I would never pull it out if I ever got in a fight due to the ball ache that goes with stabbing someone :P but anyhow if the police found it on my person for some strange reason could I face a fine or have it confiscated?

The Criminal Justice Act of 1988 states that : "It is an offence for any person, without lawful authority or good reason, to have with him in a public place, any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except for a folding pocket-knife which has a cutting edge to its blade not exceeding 3 inches." [CJA 1988 section 139
it is unlikely u would face a fine or have it confiscated as you are using it with good intentions and it folds away |

The U.K. knife laws run along the lines of common sense, although there are certain prohibitions such as, no lock knives, I have asked at a local police station because I have one in my tool box in my work as a refrigeration engineer and was concerned about the law. I was told by about 5 or six officers that they would have no problem seeing me using it in a store as it would be regarded as a tool, however if I was using it to remove dirt from under my nails in a public place, then I would have some explaining to do. I also have a kukri (Guhka knife) which I use to clear undergrowth from condensors, again the police were a little surprised but agreed it was a tool.
