When a witness talks in court.. WHAT IS THAT CALLED?

so i recently observed a trial.. i was wondering what you call the part where the witnesses answer questions and tell the courtroom their statements is called?

not an arraignment, not a preliminary hearing.. so, what is it?

Please take the time to answer if you know. i'd appreciate it.

i have a paper due in a couple of hours about my experience in the courtroom... but i have no idea what to call what i saw..
