When and How did the emancipation of minors in the United States begin?

I am writing an essay on Emancipation of Minors in California but I'm stuck trying to answer when it began and who started it.

I believe it started out with Foster Programs. You might want to research the foster care system. Teenagers in foster care who can take care of themselves with a job and with continuing their education, would benefit more from being on there own then in the foster system. BUT you cannot legally sign an agreement (e.g. for a credit card, a rental agreement for your own place) until you are 18. You cannot make your own medical decisions until you are 18 as well. Being emancipated, the youth can make all of these decisions and sign contracts, agreements, etc and be able to live on their own. Hope this helped a little.
