A copyright date is essentially the date that the creator of the media that has been copyrighted registered the item. It is proof that the person created it and can be used in court cases against anyone claiming they were the creators or illegally using the material. It used to be that copyrights were valid for 75 years after a creators death, but I think that has changed. |

It means that the author/publisher claims the exclusive right to make copies, distribute, broadcast or publish the work, and to make derivative works, as of the date mentioned.
Prior to the 1980s you had to have that copyright notice on something you published or you'd lose your right to claim it. Today, copyright is automatic, but the notice prevents scumbags from claiming they "didn't know" something was copyrighted when they're sued or brought up on criminal charges. |
