When will the USA join the civilised world?
Find answers to your legal question.

When will the USA join the civilised world?

The US has way more deaths per head of population that any other developed country:

Gun deaths per 100 000 population (1999):

USA 10.58
Canada 3.34
Switzerland 6.28
Scotland 0.39
England/Wales 0.35
Japan 0.09

(Source: Harvard Injury Control Research Center, HELP Network, World Report on Violence and Health (World Health Organisation))

Having a gun is not a constitutional right - the Constitution says:-
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

A guy with a handgun under his pillow does not consitute a well regulated militia, neither does a guy with a rifle on his wall or a guy with a gun tucked into his belt.
The word is 'People' with a capital 'P'. It is not to be confused with 'persons' as in persons wandering the streets with guns shooting at anything in sight.
A shame the majority of the US citizens do not understand their own laws.
Cowboy Culture!!!!

You are sooooooo right... and no other country in the world has violence. You'd think we would learn by now to follow everyone elses example !

bummer !

I live in the UK and would own a gun if allowed so sorry I don't agree. If anyone wants to burgle my house and enter my childrens bedrooms I will batter them to death with my baseball bat. A gun would probably hurt less

I'm also from the UK and totally agree with bartislartfarst. Except my answer to the bat would be a Half or Full Katana!

The USA IS a civilized country - the figures you quote are not just related to crime (I've read the data as well - and so can anybody else), in fact 56.5% of the figure you quote is due to gun-related suicide; 38.5% is actually due to gun-related crime; the remaining 5% is due to accidental shooting.

Before you start asking when the USA will join the civilized world, you might want to ask when the barbarian Islamic extremists, who deliberately set bombs or hijack planes to main and kill innocent civilians, will join it.

I does say "...right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." How do you have a militia if nobody has a gun? The idea is that the people have the right to keep and bear arms so that if necessary they can form a well regulated militia. So in this case "People" does mean "persons".

But anyway, your stats only point to "GUN deaths". What about over all per 100,000 population murder rates? I live in Canada, and my city had the highest per capita murder rate in north america for years. But almost none of those was with a gun. Blaming guns for murder is not correct, if the murderer didn't want to kill someone, and didn't think it would be an acceptable solution, then his having a gun wouldn't make any difference.

grow up...people kill not guns Besides many of the guns and many deaths are at the hands of illegals, or criminals...so your "statistics" are invalid as they are out of date and screwed as they do not differentiate the source of the individuals and crimes that resulted from death by gunshot.

As for the civilized (use spell check) world WHEN will the world wake up and recognize that their Nation's POPULATION*
(nurtured and free from repression ,poverty and class or religious discrimination.educated and skilled) IS their greatest resource???? Humans thrive when able to choose what to work on and how to add to/improve etc...

yes it is still the wild west .some of the above answers say that they need to carry guns to protect themselves so why don't i need to carry a gun to protect my self i live in wales so does that mean that i live in a more civilised place than the USA?

malcy
The civilised world doesn't want the USA.

As soon as they stop killing 1.5 million babies per year.

You are comparing the USA to countries of homogenous race and culture when you cite gun deaths per 100,000 poplulation.

Wow great rant! Where do you live? Pleasantville~

I own several guns. Know how and when to use (all of them) as well. I am well educated and not a gunslinger. I carry it for my families protection and will use it for such with out fear or remorse. It has saved my life twice already without firing a shot.

I own a gun safe and gun locks. So it may be a woman with the gun in her belt, watch out.....we are armed and dangerous suburban housewives galloping to the OK corral on our way to Chucky Cheese. Get real!

Criminals kill, People Kill, guns, knives or bombs its humans that kill humans, no matter the weapon. More concern should be on transfats in your food- that is killing more people than guns!

I think this is to do with 'the New World' - and the idea is that we all convert to their system. I think we have a lot more in Europe, but when do we ever see European films or other programmes?
