When you buy a pint of beer, have you legally bought the glass it comes in?
Find answers to your legal question.

When you buy a pint of beer, have you legally bought the glass it comes in?

Similar to this, if you buy a meal in a restaurant are you legally entitled to walk out with the plate, knives and forks.
What about the salt and pepper pot?

no, you just have the loan of them, come to think of it, don't you really just end up renting the beer, too?

Of course not. You have "rented" the use of those containers or utensils and the table space for the purpose of consuming the product you did buy. When you have consumed the meal/beverage, your entitlement to them ends, hence they come and clear the dishes when the food is gone...you don't need it anymore and you are done.

in beer kesks you buy the glass or put shall we say a deposit on it and if you bring it back you get your deposit back if you don't you get a nice novelty german glass. but in the UK they frown upon it.

taddy
no you are not entitled to the glass you are borrowing the glass

There are a three examples where you do buy the glass - where a premises is unlicensed they may sell you the glass and give you the beer.

At festivals or beer festivals where the glass comes in the entrance price as a souvenir.

Where it is a "plastic" not a glass to enable you to leave the premesis with it.

Otherwise it would be theft to go off with it as you have just rented it - same for tableware - if you are meant to take these they will be plastic or paper.

You get the food or the drink. That's all you're "entitled" to.

Try finding a lawyer who would represent you in this matter....one would, but only for a big sum of money because they would get their *a* *s* *s* chewed out by the judge who would be pissed off about such a dumb case.

No you've only rented the container your meal or drink is served in or on - unless its a plastic glass or a disposable container (like for chips etc) - then its yours to chuck on the street or do what you want with.

?

Only when it comes in paper cups and plates, plastic knives, spoons, forks, and packets of salt and pepper.

No, you have paid for the use of the glass, and someone serving it to you. I know it is expensive to buy any alcohol now, but if you take the glass without consent, you have in effect stolen it. As an ex licensee, it is not something landlords would chase up, but it does cost quite a bit to keep replacing them.

Yeah yeah yeah

No you are renting the use. I used to live next door to a pub and we would take a round of pints next door and drink them in our living room when the pub was busy. By the end of the week we'd take 50 pint glasses back to the pub washed and ready to use. Otherwise not unless it's a promotion, I was in a bar in New Orleans some years ago and there was a special drink for $10 with a fancy glass you could take away with you. I would think though you might have paid for your plates at a Greek wedding. It would simply be good business sense by the hotel management.
