thanks for the quick input...I wasn't sure in the about the Bible because polygamy was norm back then so I can't see how marriage would be defined as one man and one women.....and with freedom of worship, the definition of marriage cannot be based on one religion, although it can be based on a law.

At the Federal level in a law called the "Defense of Marriage Act"
Many States also have similar laws, or even clauses in their constitutions.

The answer to your question is that the laws of all the countries, cities, states etc are all different, so it depends. |

Not in the Bible. It says that a marriage is between a man and however many prepubescent girls he can afford.
Also not in Webster's dictionary, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Norway, South Africa, Nepal, Connecticut, or Massachusetts.
Most importantly, not in the mind of two men or women who have made the commitment and their families. |

It isn't.
There was polygamy in the bible. The literature definition (dictionary) of marriage is a legal union.
Effectively the one man one woman definition has been set by some western societies. |
