Since everyone on Earth has some sort of family, YOU pick when would be a good time to die. An infant, toddler, elementary school age, high school? How about college or newlywed, new parent, or new grandparent, or elder parent? There will ALWAYS be a sense of loss, no matter what age. You choose.

Wow, do I detect some anger here. I say they are both an equal tragedy. How can you put a value of this much on one life and another value on someone elses. I seem to get the feeling you lost someone in the military and they left a child behind for you to care for alone. If this is the case, my heart bleeds for you. But don't blame the father, or you will be a bitter woman for a very long time. Forgive him and move on. You have a child to care for.

Each is equally depressing but I would say the life of a child. A child is an innocent, beautiful creature who has their whole future in front of them. My neighborhood just lost 3 kids under 5 in a car accident and everyone put up pink and blue ribbons on the trees and donated money and did everything they could to try and help. Over 10,000 people went to their funeral. Although losing an adult is terrible, you can always remember all the great things they did and what changes they brought to the world. But with a child, you can only imagine what they could have done and that pains us more knowing that their life was cut short.

The adult in your question died fighting for their country and died a hero, but it is sad that the death of the child came from someone not taking care of them.

The adult has at least had a measure of life...the child has not; besides, it is hardwired into our psyche to be especially protective of children, so the death of a child hits us harder.

Death is not a tragedy it will happen to all of us as the Bible says the wages of sin are death and we are to rejoice when we die
