Alcohol is a part of history and culture, not to mention an important part of the economy. For a look at how your plan worked in the past, study up on Prohibition.
As a general rule, when you outlaw a drug, whether it be heroin or booze, the impact is that organized crime prospers. The government loses tax revenue. The people still use, they just go to a different source.
What ever happened to the land of the FREE? |

Are you a disgruntled smoker trying to make a point ? |

I need a drink! |

Just me

The prisons are full.
The government makes alot of money from alcohol.
If you need help to stop drinking, don't try to do it by making the rest of us suffer without it... just go to rehab! |

or alternatively lets not.....
why should decent people be stopped from having the odd drink ?
Sure I agree that the drunks who cause trouble should be arrested and taken out of the way of decent people, though why just because of them should decent responsible people do without ? |

No way. Sorry. Also, marijuana shouldn't be banned, neither should ephedra or nicotine. |

They tried it. It was called Prohibition.
It was the only time a Constitutional Amendment was repealed in its entirety.
But there are some "dry" counties where alcohol is not allowed. |

Did you take any notice in your history lessons? Think about America in the years of prohibition, it just bought in gangsters and boot-legging. The best thing to do is make alcohol a normal thing, let parents give their children drinks with dinner so it becomes just every day and people wouldn't abuse it. My parents have always trusted me with alcohol and let me drink at dinner, and to be honest I've only ever had two hangovers in my life (at the age of 14 with my brother) and I don't even like it anymore. Drinking is something kids have to do, it's like a right of passage, and most kids have a phase of binging and then they grow out of it, you just got to trust people more. |

Alcohol completely wrecked my life, but I don't agree with you. |

Jesus turned water into wine. Alcohol is fine in moderation. The problem arises with excess consumption or in people who are genetically predisposed to alcoholism. I don't agree that it should be banned, but there should be much greater education about it's potential dangers. |

The problem is that it's already been tried - it was called Prohibition - and the consumption of alcohol simply went underground and was responsible for allowing the various mobs (whose legacy persists eveb today) to gain huge amounts of power and undeclared wealth.
Better devote your attention to arms manufacturers. Why can't they get their kicks out of feeding the world instead of making inflated profits by allowing people - organised or otherwise - to kill one another? |

Absototallootly!! Alcohol causes more damage than smoking 200 cigs a day, it is an absolute poison, overloads the NHS, increases violent crime, if it was invented today, it would be a class A drug tomorrow!! |

they tried this before. it was called prohibition, and it created even more problems than when the booze was legal. the public has spoken, and booze shall remain legal! i'm gonna mix me up a mighty fine tanqueray and tonic just to spite you! |

I disagree, this would only stick another hand of government into our lives. Individual activity that does not hurt others is not the government's concern. When they start to hurt people, that when it becomes a problem. |
