Who is responsible for rural rescue?

Say a family is stranded in the wilderness of the Cascade Mountain Range. What agency is responsible for the search and rescue of these individuals?

If it is Federal Land the Department of Interior will coordinate the rescue, if you are outside those boundaries, the county will coordinate it.
That isn't to say they wont use the other agency if their equipment and manpower is more suitable for the particular mission. |

It depends on where it happens -- whether it's park of a federal park or forest, or a state park, or private land, or a resort... and what state or country it happened in (USA? Canada? California? Oregon? Washington? British Columbia?).
There is no one answer to this question. |

The National Park Service (a division of the US Department of Interior). It would not be unusual for the Nat'l Park Service to call upon the local State National Guard to help in search and rescue on a large scale but on smaller scales, the National Park Forest Ranger Service is used. |

If in a federal or state park then park services and the park rangers take action. Otherwise, it is a county issue -- the sheriff's dept.
Do note that there is the possibility that none of the parties is "responsible". To say they are responsible is the say that they have an obligation. In some cases, if the danger is a result of your own stupidiy, you may have to reimburse local officials for the cost of the rescue. There was a case in California of a rock climber who went climbing in an area that was marked "Off limits.. He fell off a cliff and landed on a rock outcropping with a broken leg. The park rangers had to rent a helicopter to rescue him. The young man was charged the cost of the helicopter because he was climbing where he wasn't supposed to be. |
